CompassSport Trophy Southern Heat – Chobham Common

By | Monday, 23 February 2026

The CompassSport Cup and Trophy is the main national inter-club competition. Last year, MV qualified for the National Final in Middlesbrough and finished 11th/ 22 in the Trophy. This year, Guildford Orienteers (GO) hosted the Southern Heat at Chobham Common, an area of sandy heathland and woodland near Woking. Thanks to all the GO teams and helpers for putting on such a large event – everybody seemed to have a good time.

MV had a great turnout of 38 runners, but were second favourites in the Trophy competition to Saxons OC, who sent a strong team of nearly 50 over from Kent (and had beaten us by 3 places at the 2025 Final), with only one team qualifying for this year’s Final. MV had some great runs and won 5 of the 12 Age Class courses (with SAX winning the other 7), but ultimately were pipped 1292 points to 1280…

The MV counters for the Trophy were:

  • Tim Scarbrough (Men Open) – 1st
  • Sarah Scarbrough (Women Open) – 1st
  • Ian Ditchfield (M65) – 1st
  • Simon Ling (M80/W70) – 1st
  • Hugh Scarbrough (M14) – 1st
  • Mike Brock (M45) – 2nd
  • Ralph Scarbrough (M18) – 2nd
  • Ben Seaston (M14) – 2nd
  • Dan Sullivan (Men Open) – 3rd
  • Tony Burton (M55) – 3rd
  • Paul Blagbrough (M80/W70) – 3rd
  • Ashley Tilling (M65) – 4th
  • Alex Kendall (Men Open) – 5th
  • Jocelyn Darvill (Women Open) – 5th

And the silver lining is that MV are in any case entitled to a slot in the National Final this year, as we’re hosting it, at Pippingford Park in Sussex on 17 October…
