The Events calendar pages have two functions.
Firstly, to be the prime source of information for forthcoming Mole Valley events. Information here about Mole Valley events should be reliable, and ultimately comprehensive. Details will be sketchy for events in the far future, some of which may be no more than a provisional proposal, for which the landowner of the venue may not yet have given permission, or even been approached.
Secondly, to provide summary information about selected events organised by other clubs. While I’ll try to provide correct information, I’m only copying from the other web pages, and take no responsibility for any errors, or failing to notice changes. Follow the links to the other club’s web pages for reliable information.
This is a personal selection made by Ian Ditchfield. I may not be entirely consistent, but will normally include all events within an hour or so’s drive of any part of Mole Valley, higher status events over a wider area, all of Britain’s highest-level events, and even a few overseas events. The general idea is to include any open domestic event which an orienteer based in Mole Valley would be likely to attend, and a selection of foreign events. Some of the smaller and more local events may be training exercises with no formal timing.
Except for Mole Valley’s own events, this is not an official fixtures list. If you are looking for such a document, try the South-East Association (SEOA) for other south-eastern events, or the British Orienteering Federation fixture list. A wider range of overseas events may be found on the ¨World of O¨ web site.
This list is also restricted to foot and trail orienteering events. If you are after mountain bike events, try the BMBO web site.
The distance quoted is the straight-line distance from Leatherhead. For non-Mole events, the location taken from the organising club’s website may be an assembly area, a car park, or just the middle of the mapped area.
If a time range is shown, it’s likely to be the start time range, and quite likely to be inaccurate. It’s only on this calendar to help distinguish morning, afternoon & evening events; as always check with the event details.
Different clubs have different idea of what an event closing date means. For some, it’s the last date on which entries will be accepted. For others, it’s the date on which they decide how many maps to print, and later entries will be accepted while maps last, probably at a higher price. This calendar sometimes shows a ‘closing date’, which may be either. Even if there is no closing date, don’t assume you can just turn up without pre-entering unless the event details on the organising club’s website say so. Even if late entries are permitted, it would be helpful to enter before they commit to printing a set number of maps, typically a week before the event. Closing dates within a week of an event are not usually mentioned here.
There may also be a ‘price hike’ date, which should be self-explanatory – cheaper to enter before (not on) it. Again, price hikes a week before an event are to be expected, and not mentioned here.
There may be a link an online entry website, but it’s absence doesn’t mean that the event isn’t open for entries as I may not have spotted it.
Occasionally there may be a separate “event” for an opening, closing or price hike date. Opening dates only if I think an event is likely to fill up quickly. Price and closing dates only for the most major events, and even then only if I happen to spot them.
To help you find what you are looking for, the drop-down menu has various categories – “all events”, “Mole Valley events”, “British Orienteering event grade”, or various series, for example the South East League.

Finally a reminder of the mantra for non-Mole Events. Don’t believe anything unless you can confirm it, possibly by following the link to the organising club’s website. Even if you have confirmed it once, check again for last-minute changes before travelling. I’d appreciate an e-mail if you spot one of the errors.
