What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport, combining physical and mental challenge, which is suitable for all ages and fitness levels

1. Exercising body and mind: The aim is to navigate between checkpoints (“controls”) marked on a detailed map in the fastest time. There is no set route: the skill and fun come from trying to find the best way to go. “You get a little endorphin hit every time you find a control“.

2. Getting outdoors: It’s a great way to get out and enjoy nature, with most orienteering events in the countryside – woods, moorland, parks, even sand dunes! We also orienteer in town centres and complex urban terrains like university campuses.

3. An inclusive sport: Orienteering events typically include courses appropriate for young and old alike. We have competitors all the way through from under 10 to over 80; all get courses suitable for them at events. It’s perfect for families to get children active and learning skills at the same time.
