These sessions are run jointly by Mole-Valley and Guildford Orienteering Clubs and are free to members of these clubs. Crossing out-of-bounds/uncrossable features will result in disqualification. Incursion on private land (olive green) can lead to complaints to you/us\, so please avoid. You must not cross such features even if this appears to be physically possible. Course 7 does not cross any roads (but does cross a driveway entrance) apart from the marshalled timed-out crossing of a major road at a pedestrian crossing. Both courses 6 and 7 are largely within parkland\, with use of pavements of adjacent roads. The courses have been checked by the Controller. We can arrange for the course to be shown to a parent at registration if there is any concern for a child’s safety. Adults who are shadowing: to remain competitive\, complete your own run first. \nThere will be no String course but there is a children’s play area in Roseberry Park. \nPlease be courteous to other park users: it is a bank holiday weekend. E.g. avoid crossing any spontaneous (i.e. unmapped!) sports games in the parks or family gatherings etc. \nCompetitors under 16 on the day of the event are not allowed to compete on courses 1 to 5 unless accompanied by an adult. \nSafety Briefing: \n\nCompetitors take part at their own risk and are always responsible for their own safety.\nIt is part of the ethos of our sport that competitors are expected to stop and help a fellow injured competitor. If it is unlikely the competitor will be able to return to the event centre\, officials should be notified as soon as possible.\nAll runners will encounter uneven surfaces – please take care.\nTake care negotiating steps especially on descent. Particularly uneven steps and after and during rain when they could be slippery.\nThe competition takes place in an urban area alongside members of the public with numerous road crossings necessary. The speed limit within the competition area does not exceed 30mph. Please take care when running and look out for moving traffic\, bicycles\, members of the public. Please use pedestrian crossings if possible. Brightly coloured clothing is recommended to mitigate the risk of collisions. Please take particular care not to obstruct other members of the public when running around unsighted corners\, along narrow paths and emerging from narrow alleys onto pavements. Local residents have priority close to their houses even if they obstruct your progress. Please do not alarm them.\nWithin all open spaces you may encounter dogs being walked.\nWithin Rosebery Park there is a pond. Most courses\, including the junior courses\, go near/alongside this feature\, on paths. Parents\, please remind your children to take particular care to remain on the path alongside this.\nParticularly for junior competitors\, there is as ever the risk of stranger danger. Parents: Please remind your juniors to exercise vigilance. There will be no sad/smiley faces on course 7 that would otherwise inform competitors they have made a wrong/correct turn or navigation decision. See below: Safeguarding Child Protection & Photography\nWeather-related risks: running surfaces may be slippery after or during rain. There is a risk of dehydration in hot conditions so please hydrate before and after your run. Drinking water will be available at the Event Centre. If it is forecast to be very hot\, a drink station will be provided at a manned control.\nYOU MUST DOWNLOAD\, even if you retire\, so we know you have returned safely.\nPlease make us aware at enquiries of existing relevant medical conditions and unexpected reactions/allergies that we should be aware of before running.\nSafety bearing back to the Event Centre varies depending on where you are on the course. If lost\, please ask a member of the public or another orienteer to direct you to Woodcote Grove.\nAny risk of dangerous litter\, potential for broken glass and used needles at controls will be minimised by a specific check for these on the lead up to and on the morning of the event. However\, please remain vigilant for this risk whilst running on other parts of the course.\nThere will be a First Aid kit at Enquiries/Download. This will operate on a “self-help” basis\, although there will be a club First-Aider available.\nThe nearest A&E hospital is Epsom General Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom KT18 7EG (500m SW of Rosebery Park)\nCovid: Please follow the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.\nCourses close at 14:30\n\nA full risk assessment has been prepared and will be available upon request at Download/Enquiries. British Orienteering 3rd Party insurance does not cover non-residents of the United Kingdom – such individuals should have their own cover. \nTiming and control punching: SportIdent (SI) punching will be used throughout with SIAC enabled for all controls EXCEPT the Start and Finish.  All competitors will need to “dib” at both the Start and the safety control after the Finish. Most controls will be attached to “street furniture” of some sort. If dibbing the control please ensure you dib from the front – they do not always work when punched from the rear.  Others\, including the Finish\, will be mounted on standard orienteering stakes. There will be a SIAC battery test at the Start. However\, if a SIAC “dibber” battery fails then “dib” at all controls. \nStarts: One start for all courses\, approximately 10-minute walk from Event Centre\, in Rosebery Park. Start times have been selected by competitors and are from 10.30 to 12.30. If you are late for your selected start\, you will be allowed to start when there is a free start time for your course. There are no toilets at the start. Juniors on courses 6 & 7 must start between 11:30 and 12:30. \n\nNote: Novices on all courses well before 12:30pm\, as a safety measure and to avoid possible disappointment\, as courses close at 14:30. \nStart procedure: \n\nBefore call-up: SIAC Battery test unit and clear stations. Course 7 maps will be available to course 7 competitors\nCall up -4 minutes (1st box): Check Station. SIAC users are reminded that the Check Station enables the contactless operation of their dibbers.\n-3 minutes (2nd box): Control descriptions and SIAC “working test” box. If your SIAC does not work on this box then go back (quickly!) to clear\, check and test again.\n-2 minutes (3rd box): Blank maps\, appropriate for each course/paper size as listed under course details.\nThe start line is at the front of the 4th and final box (-1 minute). All competitors need to “dib” at the Start control and then collect the map from under the course box.\nPlease make sure you know which course you are running and pick up the correct map! Those with double sided maps should ensure they follow the correct side first. i.e. where Control 1 follows the start triangle.\n\n\nFinish: Punching Finish for ALL\, approximately 40m from the start in Rosebery Park. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD EVEN IF YOU ABANDON YOUR RACE. Return any hired dibber. If you are involved in any incidents involving damage\, injury or a dispute with a member of the public\, please let us know when you report to download. Courses close at 14.30\, after which controls will be collected. \nClothing: Shorts and running vests are permitted – dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. Conventional road-running footwear is recommended; studs are inappropriate. All runners are advised to wear a bright coloured top for safety. \nResults: Provisional results will be live during the event.  The link will be on your split’s printout via a QR code. Final results will be published asap after the event at www.mvoc.org \nRefreshments: No water or food will be provided at the Finish control\, but water will be available at the Event Centre nearby. There are numerous food outlets in Epsom town centre. \n\nSafeguarding\, child protection and photography: Competitors are permitted to carry a mobile phone for use in an emergency\, and children and vulnerable adults are encouraged to do so.  The Emergency Contact number is printed on the competition map. \n\nThe lost child handover point is the Enquiries Desk at the Event Centre. \n\n\nJuniors should be advised that if they feel concerned about their safety at any point\, they should approach an adult competitor for assistance. If adult competitors become aware of a suspicious incident or are approached by a concerned child\, it is their responsibility to provide immediate assistance.  Any incident must be reported to Enquiries. \n\n\nAny under 16’s travelling on their own should notify Enquiries of their attendance. \n\n\nIn accordance with British Orienteering Child Welfare Policy and Procedures\, we request that any person wishing to engage in any video\, zoom or close-range photography should read and comply with Section 4.8 of British Orienteering’s O Safe Policy. Organisers reserve the right to challenge anyone who is giving cause for concern.  If anyone has concerns about inappropriate or intrusive photography\, they should raise them with the Organiser\, contactable via Enquiries.  Official photographers are required to register with British Orienteering and wear a special Hi-Viz vest. Anyone who does not wish to have their photo taken should obtain a form from Enquiries or the BOF website and hand it in to Enquiries \n\n\nAny last-minute changes\, including postponement due to the forecast of dangerous weather conditions\, will be circulated to competitors by email via racesignup. \nComplaints and protests: If you have a complaint about your course\, or any other aspect of the event\, please come and discuss it initially with the event officials (Organiser and/or Planner) at download/enquiries. We will involve the Controller if necessary if the issue is related to the fairness of the course. We will endeavour to resolve all issues on the day. Courses in urban areas have in the past been subject to vandalism / removal of controls and we ask you to be alert to this possibility.\n\nThe small print: By entering this event competitors agree to abide by the Participant Code of Conduct\, a copy of which can be found on the British Orienteering website. SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at Horton Country Park
DESCRIPTION:3rd event in our 4-part summer series (subsequent event 29 July Ashtead). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members)\, or £4 for pairs/groups/families \nMeeting point and Après-O: Registration in the beer garden of The William Bourne pub\, Moor Lane\, Chessington\, KT9 2BQ – map. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~10-minute walk from Chessington North railway station. The pub has a small (20-25 space) car park or use nearby on-street parking e.g. on Chessington Hill Park. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. The route is mostly in Horton Country Park. There are three minor road crossings\, parents of children please note. Please note\, crossing the Chessington Road from the pub beer garden to the start on the other side of the road is needed.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\, odds and evens format.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. E.g. control “33” will score 30 points\, and control “29” will score 20 points.\n“Odds and evens” means you start with either odd-numbered or even numbered controls and may switch once to the other. You don’t need to visit all even-numbered controls or all odd-numbered controls and could just visit one block of controls.\n\nThe first block is determined by whether two odd-numbered or two even-numbered controls are visited before two of the other (or stated another way\, of the first three non-duplicated controls visited\, two are even or two are odd).\nThe flip to the second block is signalled by visiting two controls in the second block in succession\, i.e. two odd-numbered controls after an initial block of even-numbered controls or vice versa. (There is no “switch” control if you have previously run “odds and evens” event with a switch control.)\nControls of the wrong parity in a block (i.e. odds visited in an even block and vice versa) do not count towards the points score but can be visited in the correct block for points. These controls are listed as “Extras” in the results table.\n\n\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute.\n\n\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start across the road from the pub. \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used. This means using a smartphone with the MapRun app (latest is version 7)\, or load the MapRunG app onto a compatible Garmin watch. Details of how orienteering works with this app are here. You will download the course to the app ideally before you arrive: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2025 Summer Series. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:10\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Parkland with extensive path network and some urban sections of Clarenden Park. The courses have been designed to avoid the need for full leg cover as the courses are path-based. It is possible on the score course that you may choose (but don’t have to!) to go through long grass. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Tim Scarbrough chair@mvoc.org. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nThe start is the other side of Moor Lane from the pub. Do not rush! Please await a safe time to cross Moor Lane\, or cross at the traffic lights 160 metres west up the hill. Parents/guardians to accompany under 16s.\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant traffic\, have good visibility\, and any traffic has been observed at low speeds. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, kerbs; please take care.\nThe weather is forecast to be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available in the pub.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21:15 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nCourses suitable for shorts. You may choose routes with longer vegetation\, with small risk of nettle sting / bramble scratch\, so could consider full leg cover on the odds & evens course – NB the weather forecast is warm (27 degrees at 7pm).\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care.\nPonds shall not be entered; they could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run particularly if you wore shorts.\nThe event area is shared with dog walkers and horse riders. Please give them a wide berth and slow down\, and alert in advance if approaching from behind.\nThe emergency phone number is printed on your map should you require assistance. If you are not carrying a mobile\, shout or use a whistle to summon help.\nThe event includes a public park; there are stranger danger risks. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nPlease confidentially disclose existing medical conditions that the organiser should be aware of to the registration team.\nSafety bearing: North back to Chessington Road / Moor Lane. Look up: the pub is located on Moor Lane underneath large electricity pylon/cables.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.

Please check for ticks after running and seek medical advice if you develop flu like symptoms or a spreading circular rash after being bitten. There is an excellent government leaflet here. \nInsurance: All of our events are registered with British Orienteering and are covered by their public liability insurance; individuals are advised to consider their own private accident insurance. \nPlease note that the insurance only covers those registered as being part of the event so if you are taking part as a group or are accompanying / shadowing a child please make sure you register the names of everyone taking part as you sign up. \nPrivacy: when participating in our events/activities your name may appear in the results section of this website or in newspaper reports. Read our data protection page to see how we look after your personal data.

SUMMARY:Mole evening score event on Epsom Downs
DESCRIPTION:Mole Valley invite you to the world famous racecourse for an evening score event. \nPart of the “Kent Night Cup” series\, but you don’t have to be competing in that series to enjoy this event. Come to that\, you don’t have to go to Kent to compete in the series\, there are also be events in Sussex and SE London. \nEven though the main course crosses roads\, under-16 juniors are still permitted. There will be a smaller mapped area for U16’s\, with no road crossings\, and an adjustment to the scoring system to compensate for not having access to all the controls. Note however that unaccompanied night orienteering is not regarded as suitable for young children. All under-18’s must have parent/guardian permission to enter. \nDirections/Parking\nFree parking at the “Tea Hut” car park on Epsom Downs\, accessed from Old London Road immediately north of its roundabout junction with the B290. W3W hired.clues.truth; GPS 51.31207\,-0.24541; OS TQ223584. Postcode KT18 5PP is about 200m further east. \nPublic transport\nTrains: Tattenham Corner station 500m\, Epsom Downs station 1.6km\, Epsom station 3.3km.\nBuses: “Tattenham Corner” (not “Tattenham Corner railway station”) bus stop is adjacent\, only Metrobus services 460 & 480 are likely to be any use. bustimes.org \nTerrain\nThe bulk of the mapped area is open grassland\, very fast running. Some controls are in woodland\, which will require accurate navigation if you are not to lose time. No steep hills\, but there is a 50m height difference between the lowest and highest points of the map. \nThe southern ¾ of the area is the famous racecourse and adjacent training gallops. The racecourse itself is bounded by white rails and fences\, and is out-of-bounds except at crossing points. Most crossing points are on the level\, but one is a tunnel. There are other tracks bounded by white rails\, but without fences; these are in-bounds. The one road in this area of the map closes to the public at 5pm. There are a couple of houses which use it for access\, so a car on the road is possible\, but visibility is excellent and you’ll see it a mile off; just step off the road if you see headlights. \nThe northern ¼ of the area is a golf course\, criss-crossed by public roads. All these roads have a path or runnable grassland besides them\, so there is no need to run along them. I haven’t cluttered the map with purple crosses; nevertheless please cross at right-angles and give way to traffic. Some of the roads have a little bank alongside them\, too small to map\, but big enough to trip over; take care! Please keep off the golf greens\, these are the small areas of particularly short grass with a flag in the middle\, mapped as out-of-bounds. Look carefully at your map\, as small areas of out-of-bounds hashing can be difficult to spot. \nFormat\nA one-hour score event with a mass start at 19:30. The main course will have 20 controls\, numbered 90 to 109 which may be visited in any order. You score a point for each control visited\, and lose a point for each minute\, or part of a minute\, late back. \nTo keep the faster people occupied for an hour\, there will be bonus points available. You get an extra point for consecutively punching 3 controls in the 90-99 number range\, ie without punching a control numbered 100 or above in between. Likewise you get an extra point for punching 3 100-109 controls without a 90-99 in between. No control can be counted in more than one bonus sequence. There is no requirement for the ‘sequence’ controls to be consecutive numbers\, they just have all to be ‘90’s or all ‘100’s. Thus 93-91-96 is as good as 90-91-92. \nSummary: \n\n\n\npoint for each control punched\n20\n\n\npoint for each series of three “90”s controls\n3\n\n\npoint for each series of three “100”s controls\n3\n\n\n\n  \nScoring examples: \n\n\n\nyou punch 101\,104\,90\,102\,103\,93\,105\,97\,107\,106\,finish\n10 points for 10 controls\n\n\nyou punch 90\,93\,97\,101\,104\,102\,103\,105\,107\,106\,finish\n13 points\, 10 for controls\, 3 for sequences 90-93-97\, 101-104-102 & 103-105-107\n\n\nyou punch 101\,104\,102\,90\,93\,97\,103\,105\,107\,106\,finish\n13 points\, 10 for controls\, 3 for sequences 101-104-102\, 90-93-97 & 103-105-107\n\n\n\n  \nTo reiterate\, this is NOT one of those events where you have to visit all your 90’s before 100’s or vice versa. You can jump about between 90’s and 100’s as much you like and each control will score. If you are not going for bonus points\, the control codes do not matter at all. \nPunching will be with SI. SIAC (touch-free punching) should be enabled\, so be careful if you pass close to a control that you do not want to punch because it would break a sequence. If you visit a control twice\, only the first visit will be count for scoring purposes. \nSI dibbers (the old type\, not SIAC) are available to hire via the entries system. \nPlease download as soon as you have finished (or given up) to avoid the organiser having a nervous breakdown while organising a search party for you. \nSpecial rules for juniors who have yet to reach their 16th birthday\nBritish Orienteering does not permit you to race across public roads. Therefore you are not permitted to visit the controls on the golf course. This deprives you of the opportunity of visiting 6 controls\, and getting 2 bonus sequences\, reducing your maximum score by 8 points. To compensate\, if you visit all 14 controls which are available to you\, you will get a bonus point for every complete 3 minutes by which you finish early\, up to a maximum of 8 bonus points for finishing in 36 minutes or less. No bonus for finishing early if you don’t punch all 14 controls. “Complete” 3 minutes means that you must finish within 57 minutes for one bonus point\, 57 minutes and one second would be too late. \nThese bonus points are only available to U16’s; older people need to visit controls rather than finish early. \nThe finish is on the far side of a road from the car park and download\, however my understanding is that you are allowed to cross a road so long as you are not racing. Take care\, and make use of the mid-road island next to the roundabout. \nEntries\nIn advance only and online only\, closing at midnight the day before the event\, via racesignup. Discount for the first four people agreeing to collect about five controls each after the event (experienced night orienteers only please). \n\n\n\nSenior British Orienteering member\n£5.00\n\n\nSenior British Orienteering member offering to collect controls\n£2.50\n\n\nSenior non-member\n£6.00\n\n\nJuniors (U21 on 31/12/2025)\n£2.00\n\n\nSI dibber hire\n£1.00\n\n\n\nLost hire dibbers will be charged at £30. \nUnder-18’s must have the permission of parent or guardian to enter. \nPrecautions\nTorch and a backup compulsory. A mobile phone with a light will do for backup provided it has adequate battery – carrying a phone is recommended anyway. An emergency phone number (ICE) will be printed on the map. Cagoules\, hat & gloves may be compulsory if the weather is bad. Please ensure that you clear and check your SI dibber before starting (we use the check box to know who has started) and please download as soon as possible after finishing. \nIn the case of extreme bad weather\, the event may be cancelled. The most likely cause would be thunderstorms – the downs are high and exposed and lightning would be a serious risk. If in doubt\, please check the Mole Valley website. \nThe usual orienteering hazards are present\, including trees anxious to trip you up or poke your eye out. With much of the course being tree-free fast running\, it’s easy to rush into the woodland at the same speed without taking due care. There are also a few rabbit holes\, and a deep pit close to the northernmost control (109). \nThe roads are fast but visibility is very good\, just watch out for the small earth-banks along the edge\, usually too small to map but big enough to trip you up. You may cross the roads\, but not run along the tarmac; running the grass besides them is fine. \nFormal COVID-19 restrictions are a thing of the past\, but please stay away if you suspect you may have a contagious disease\, and respect any desire of others for social distancing. \nSafety bearing\nIf lost on the racecourse side (south of the start)\, head north. If lost on the golf course (north of the start)\, head south. Once you see the the racecourse grandstand\, looking like a stranded cruise liner\, head east to the event car park (400m east of the grandstand). \nMap\n1:10\,000\, 5m contours\, ISOM 2017 (ie standard “forest” map)\, last updated by Philip Gristwood in 2023. (Control-free) map courtesy of the O-Tools website.\nMaps will be printed on A4 waterproof paper. Map legend obscured by control descriptions (except for the U16 course)\, print you own from the online map if required. Separate/loose control descriptions are not provided. \nSpecial Item on map and control descriptions: black circle is a coal tax post\, a metal bollard about 1.2m high and painted white. \nSpecial map symbol: a golf green is a shown as a dashed green circle/oval with out-of-bounds hashing as infill.
