DESCRIPTION:A closed event for Mole Valley members & guests only \n \nMoley is looking forward to seeing you all for our AGM Event & Picnic \nVenue:  Headley Heath\, Headley Common Road\, Epsom KT18 6NN – What3Words: cubs.brings.baking \nMeeting point is 100m west of the car park on the open grassed area. \nParking: Free parking for National trust members. There is a £4 charge for 2 hours for non-members\, however the ticket machine has been out of operation for the past 6 months and currently remains so. \nMap: 1:10\,000 orienteering map updated by Mike Elliot in Jan 2019. \nCourse: A 60-minute score course\, with 30 controls and one switch between odds and evens. \nThere will be a shorter 2km line course for younger members and less experienced orienteers \nSI will be used to record progress rather than the Map Run app so please bring dibbers. \nBriefing and start at 11:00: everyone sets off at (almost) the same time – don’t be late!  Start and finish is on the grassed area 100m west of the car park. \nSafety:  \n\nPlease provide Paul with your mobile phone number in case of missing runner                           \nBe tick aware – check for ticks after your run         \nThe area is busy with dog walkers\, horse riders\, families – slow down and give a wide berth.\nThere are some tall ferns and long grass to traverse to reach a few controls\, and you may encounter the odd bramble or nettle\, so full leg cover is recommended.\n\nPicnic: Bring your own food\, drink and chair/rug. \nAGM: Following the AGM\, various awards will be presented including Moley presented to the winner of this picnic event. \nFacilities: There are no toilets. \nAttendance/Entries: Please notify Paul with the following information \n\nIf you intend to do the score course\nIf you wish to do the 2km line course.\nIf you will only attend the AGM & Picnic\nIf you are unable to attend.\nIf you need to borrow a dibber.\n\nOrganiser: Paul Byers.  paul.byers@me.com \n***You are responsible for your own safety and take part in this event at your own risk***

Seniors £12\, Juniors £6 by 28 August and entry on day (subject to map availability\, payment by card only). £2 surcharge for non-BOF Seniors. SI-Card hire £1 (lost units £30) or contactless SIAC hire £2.50 (lost units £65). \nDirections (all): The start and finish are in Reigate Priory Park. Please proceed directly to the start if you are pre-entered\, via the recommended routes shown below for either coming by public transport or by driving. There will be a bag/key drop at Enquiries. If you need to enter on the day or collect a hired dibber\, please proceed to enquiries/download according to the mapped route. \nDirections by car: Please use the Bancroft Road multi-storey car park (post code RH2 0AN or what3words ///cubes.clever.forgot or google maps). The car park has a height restriction at its entrance from the A217 of 2.0m and is free on Sundays. Please follow the below walking route (~700m\, approx. 7mins) to Priory Park\, which goes via the public toilets (also toilets at the Café close to the start). Then see o-map on next page for where the start is in Priory Park. \n \nFor the use of customers of Morrisons\, there are toilets in Morrisons. Its car park (free for customers) has an enforced (£100? penalty) maximum stay of 2 hours – see notices. \nBell Street car park is not recommended because: the route to the start from there goes through the competition area; it does not have enough spaces to accommodate all competitors; and it is prioritised for helpers. However\, should you prefer to use this car park e.g. due to vehicles above 2.0m height\, please walk north from the car park along the A217 (Bell Street) to join the marked pedestrian route above. \n \nDirections via public transport: The nearest railway station is Reigate station (1km)\, direct services from London Victoria\, Guildford\, Reading\, Gatwick. There are currently no strikes\, or known engineering works\, planned for the date of the event. The 1km walk to the start is approximately 10-15 minutes (see route shown on map to the right): turn left out of the station heading south on London Road (A217)\, use the crossing to continue southwest along London Road (A25) against the flow of one-way traffic\, cross straight over at the junction with the High Street on to Park Lane\, bearing left after 50m to take the road into Priory Park. Then follow o-map below. \nCompetitors arriving by rail may wish to make use of the station toilets as there aren’t other toilets en route. \nHow to get to the start and enquiries/download within Reigate Priory Park\nPlease follow the routes shown on the map below to get to the start. \n \nEvent centre: Reigate Priory Park\, using MV club tent\, close to the Park Café (GPS 51.2348\,-0.2078; W3W feast.jobs.pardon)\, with toilets\, water (tap)\, registration and download. Start\, Finish\, childrens’ playground (free) and probably a mobile fairground with bouncy inflatables (charged) all adjacent. Skateboard park (free) 150m. \nExtra toilets: If on the way to the event\, you could use the public toilets on the NW side of the Bell Street/Bancroft Road junction (GPS 51.23681\,-0.2055; W3W rounds.firms.next)\, this would ease the pressure on the park cafe toilets. \nMap and terrain: Map by Mike Elliot (MV) surveyed 2023\, updated and extended by Ian Roberts in 2026\, overprinted with the courses and printed on waterproof paper. Drawn with OCAD2020 to ISSprOM2019-2. Scale 1:4\,000 with 5 metre contours\, 150 metres between magnetic north lines(course 5 is at 1:3\,000). \nPavement edges are only shown for major streets and significant paved areas\, where they serve a navigational purpose – for clarity the small pavements on most roads are not shown. Busier major roads (e.g. centre of Reigate) have been mapped using a darker shade of brown than other streets to aid your decisions of route choices. See example on the right showing the high street in this darker shade. There are some stretches of busier roads that do not have pavements on both sides; it is not advised that you run on the road but cross on to the pavement side. \n \nReigate has a pedestrian tunnel by the castle. This map snippet shows a north-south tunnel with 2 entrances (the black triangles) plus the east-west path over the top with 4 small towers and a set of uncrossable walls. Most courses visit this site\, some even have a control nearby. \n  \nThe map\, as printed\, does not have a full legend with only impassable/out-of-bounds features listed (per snippet). Incursion on private land (olive green) can lead to complaints to you/us\, so please avoid. You must not cross such features even if this appears to be physically possible. Courses will be on grass/tracks in Priory Park as well as paths. The majority of the rest of the courses are on hard standing of tarmac road and pavements. Two overprinted out of bounds areas within Priory Park are small temporary funfairs in the park. Course 6 leaves the Priory Park along a little used access road to the High Street and then goes along the High Street to a light-controlled pedestrian crossing. This crossing has a control at both sides and will be manned. The time between these 2 controls will be excluded and competitors must only cross when instructed by the marshals. Adults who are shadowing: to remain competitive complete your own run first. \nSafety briefing: \n\nCompetitors are reminded that they take part at their own risk and are responsible at all times for their own safety.\nAll runners will encounter uneven surfaces – please take care.\nThe competition takes place in a public urban area with numerous road crossings and in busy areas with members of the public. Please take care when running and look out for moving traffic\, bicycles\, members of the public. Pedestrian crossings in busy areas are marked as optional crossing points. Brightly coloured clothing is recommended to mitigate the risk of collisions. Please take particular care running around unsighted corners and along narrow paths.\nParticularly within Priory Park\, you may encounter dogs being walked.\nWithin Priory Park there is a lake (deep water). Course 7 (i.e. the junior course) goes near/alongside this lake on paths. Parents\, please remind your children to take particular care here.\nPlease avoid running through the skate park in Priory Park.\nParticularly for junior competitors\, there is as ever the risk of stranger danger. Please remind your juniors to exercise vigilance. There are no sad/smiley faces on course 7.\nWeather-related risks: running surfaces may be slippery in case of rain; there is a risk of dehydration– please hydrate before and after your run. We will not provide water unless it is forecast to be very hot (these details will be updated in this case)\,however\, see under refreshments about the mid-course “water-drop”.\nCourses 1 and 2 cross the railway. The map does not overprint optional crossing points. The level crossing\, when closed\, can be avoided using either the adjacent footbridge or the pedestrian subway to the East (with no need to pass through the ticket barriers).\nYou must download\, even if you abandon your race.\nPlease make us aware at the enquiries tent of existing relevant medical conditions and unexpected reactions/allergies that we should be aware of before running.\nSafety bearing back to Priory Park varies depending on where you are in the course.\nThere is a specific risk of litter\, potential for broken glass and used needles as advised by the school granted land access permission. This is relevant for courses 1\, 2\, 3\, 4 and 5. Whilst we will be doing a specific check for this on the morning of the event\, please remain vigilant for this risk.\nThere will be a First Aid kit at Enquiries/Download. This will operate on a “self-help” basis\, although there will be a club First-Aider available.\nThe nearest A&E hospital is East Surrey Hospital\, Canada Avenue\, Redhill\, RH1 5RH (~10 minute drive\, 2.5 miles)\nCovid: Please follow the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.\nCourses close at 14:30\n\nA full risk assessment has been prepared and will be available upon request at Download/Enquiries. British Orienteering 3rd Party insurance does not cover any non-member of a British Orienteering affiliated orienteering club at this event if that person has taken part in three or more British Orienteering registered events. \nTiming and control punching: SportIdent (SI) Punching will be used throughout with SIAC enabled for all the controls in the “terrain”. The start control WILL NOT be SIAC enabled and all competitors will need to “dib” at the start. The finish control will be SIAC enabled (i.e. it will be in “fly-by” mode). Most controls will be attached to “street furniture” of some sort; others including the finish will be on standard aluminium stakes. Should a control fail then use the attached pin punch on the map and explain at Download. If a SIAC “dibber” battery fails then “dib” at all controls. \nStarts: One start for all courses. Start times have been selected by competitors\, and are from 10.30 to 12.30. It is a punching start. If you are late for your selected start\, you will be allowed to start when there is a free start time for your course. \nStart procedure: \n\nBefore call-up: SIAC Battery test unit and clear stations. Course 7 maps will be available to course 7 competitors\nCall up -4 minutes (1st box): Check Station. SIAC users are reminded that the Check Station enables the contactless operation of their dibbers.\n-3 minutes (2nd box): Control descriptions and SIAC “working test” box. If your SIAC does not work on this box then go back (quickly!) to clear\, check and test again.\n-2 minutes (3rd box): Blank maps\, appropriate for each course/paper size as listed under course details.\nThe start line is at the front of the 4th and final box (-1 minute). All competitors need to “dib” at the Start control and then collect the map from under the course box.\n\nFinish: “Fly-by” finish for SIAC users otherwise a punching finish. The finish is 30 metres from Download/Enquiries. Please make your way to Download as soon as you have finished and do not go home unless you have downloaded\, even if you had to retire from the course. If you are involved in any incidents involving damage\, injury or a dispute with a member of the public\, please let us know when you report to download. Courses close 14.30\, after which controls will be collected. \nResults: Provisional results at https://www.sportident.co.uk/results/MV/2026/20260830ReigateUrban/ live during the event; this link will also be on your splits printout via a QR code. Final results will be published asap after the event at www.mvoc.org. The planner would appreciate routes logged on Route Gadget when it’s available as he would like to know which route choices worked and if everybody went the same way on any. \nAny last minute changes will be circulated to competitors by email via racesignup. \nConduct: Please remember that you are a guest in this town. For many of the people you will encounter\, it is home\, and they are not the ones who invited you. Go carefully around blind corners\, and don’t demand to be given priority in narrow alleys and crowded streets. And above all\, cross roads safely\, and that means without alarming drivers as well not being hit by their vehicles! \nSome of the courses pass through a memorial garden and/or a cemetery. Please be particularly respectful in the vicinity of anyone mourning a loved one. \nThis is not the British Championship! Your first priority should be not to upset anyone\, winning the race is secondary. \nRefreshments: Next to the Finish is the Priory Park café (food\, drinks\, card payment possible) together with toilets at the rear. There are several options for refreshments in Reigate. No water will be provided at the finish\, however there will be a monitored (loosely) designated water drop close to the finish that Courses 1 through 4 and 6 pass close to at about half-way though the courses if competitors wish to leave mid-race refreshments (but there will be NO time-out at this point). Please ensure you collect your bottle afterwards\, or dispose of it properly – no littering! \nRoads Courses 1-5: Competitors on the adult courses\, 1-5\, are expected to use roads safely. Cross with care\, and without alarming drivers. If running along a busy road\, use the pavements\, not the roadway. There are some sections of major road which have a pavement on one side only. To assist your route choice\, the side of the road with no pavement is marked out-of-bounds.  \nThere is also a section of narrow minor road squeezed between walls with no safe space for pedestrians. This is marked out-of-bounds\, but is a parallel path behind the wall to the west. \nRoads Course 6: Course 6 competitors must stay off the busy roads\, but will need to cross the busy High Street twice at pedestrian operated traffic lights. There are controls each side of the crossing\, remember to punch them both each time. No need to rush across\, the time taken between these two controls will be excluded from your competition time (up to a maximum of two minutes; you won’t need that long).\n \nCourse 6 competitors may\, indeed will need to\, run along the pavement of the High Street\, it’s only the roadway which is out-of-bounds. They will also need to cross two car park access roads; these are small car parks and the roads won’t be busy\, but will still need to be careful. \nRoads Course 7: Course 7 is completely traffic-free. \nDeep water: Course 7 passes close to a lake. Competitors should use a path around the edge rather than try to go straight through the water 😉 \nUnderfoot: The adult courses\, 1-5\, are around 80-85% hard surfaces: tarmac\, concrete\, paving stones\, occasional steps and even a short section of cobbles. The rest is mostly mown grass\, plus a small proportion of unsurfaced path\, and course 1 even has a short section of “white” forest.\nCourse 6 is around 40% hard surface\, 25% mown grass\, 20% unsurfaced path and 15% “white” forest.\nCourse 7 is 70% on paths\, almost all of them unsurfaced\, and 30% mown grass. \nThe usual hard-surface trip hazards are present: kerbs obviously\, but also misaligned paving stones\, raised ironworks\, and anything pushed up by tree roots underneath. The unsurfaced paths are rich in tree-roots. The “white” forest is delightfully runnable\, but autumn has come early this year\, and the forest floor is covered by leaves; dry leaves which have no adherence to the sloping ground underneath are surprisingly slippery\, and so grippy shoes are essential for Course 6. \nWhite forest on Course 6. Shorts or leggings? Your call! \nClothing: Full body cover is not obligatory\, indeed the planner recommends shorts for courses 1-5 & 7. The “white” forest on course 6 has fallen sticks as well as leaves\, and there are some patches of hostile vegetation\, although these are easily avoided. Some might prefer some leg protection on course 6\, although the planner has been all around course 6 in shorts with no problems. Dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. Conventional road-running footwear is recommended; studs are inappropriate. All runners are advised to wear a bright coloured top for safety. \nVegetation: There are some places where there is a theoretical option of running through vegetation which is mapped as green or has undergrowth stripes. Don’t even think about it!
