SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at Horton Country Park
DESCRIPTION:5th event in our 7-part summer series (subsequent event Wed 15 July\, Oaks Park). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. Free for MV members. For non-MV members: £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members) \nMeeting point and Après-O: Assembly in the beer garden of The William Bourne pub\, Moor Lane\, Chessington\, KT9 2BQ – map. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~10-minute walk from Chessington North railway station. The pub has a small (20-25 space) car park or use nearby on-street parking e.g. on Chessington Hill Park. \nNewcomers: we recommend watching this 5 minute video on youtube to introduce the sport and the map. At the event\, we will be happy to provide further introduction and instruction. \nCourses: \nFor all U16s\, parents/guardians need to accompany children across the road from the pub to the course start on the opposite side of the road.  \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (approximately “yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 12 controls. The route is mostly in Horton Country Park. For U16s: we recommend shadowing on the course for the three/four (depending on route taken) minor road crossings.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\, odds and evens format. U16s permitted\, but see safety notes.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. E.g. control “33” will score 30 points\, and control “29” will score 20 points.\n“Odds and evens” means you start with either odd-numbered or even numbered controls and may switch once to the other. You don’t need to visit all even-numbered controls or all odd-numbered controls and could just visit one block of controls.\n\nThe first block is determined by whether two odd-numbered or two even-numbered controls are visited before two of the other (or stated another way\, of the first three non-duplicated controls visited\, two are even or two are odd).\nThe flip to the second block is signalled by visiting two controls in the second block in succession\, i.e. two odd-numbered controls after an initial block of even-numbered controls or vice versa. (There is no “switch” control if you have previously run “odds and evens” event with a switch control.)\nControls of the wrong parity in a block (i.e. odds visited in an even block and vice versa) do not count towards the points score but can be visited in the correct block for points. These controls are listed as “Extras” in the results table.\n\n\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute.\n\n\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start across the road from the pub. \nFormat: This event will exclusively use the maprun app to record participation – i.e. you will go around the course with either a phone with the maprun app\, or if you have a garmin-compatible watch\, using the Garmin watch maprun app. The app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls; dibbers will not be used. \nIf you have not used maprun before\, we recommend watching this 2 minute video on youtube first. To download the phone app\, choose android phones or apple phones. \nIf you want to use MapRun on a compatible Garmin watch – to avoid taking your phone around with you – please ensure you still have MapRun installed on your phone. This will enable you to start without the PIN. Instructions for the garmin watch app are here \nPlease download the app before arriving and ideally the course too. To download the course in the app: click on ‘Select Event’\, select the third icon along the top (folder) and follow the folder path UK > Mole Valley > 2026 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure can be explained at Assembly/the start. \nMap: A4 1:10\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Parkland with extensive path network and some urban sections of Clarenden Park. The courses have been designed to avoid the need for full leg cover as the courses are path-based. It is possible on the score course that you may choose (but don’t have to!) to go through long grass. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 7 events counts towards your total score. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Ben Toogood benjamintoogood@gmail.com. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nThe weather is forecast to be very hot (7pm 31 deg C\, wet bulb globe temperature 27 deg C after accounting for humidity). Please arrive fully hydrated. We strongly recommend you carry water during the event. Water available in the pub. The course is estimated to be ~50% shaded on woodland trails.\nYou may wish to consider beginning your run later in the start window (until 7.30pm) when it will be slightly cooler but be advised the course will still close at 8.40pm and if you are not back at the pub you must call the emergency number on the map.\nManage your effort – this is a fun summer series. It is not worth pushing yourself to the limit.\nIt is mandatory to carry a mobile phone (and alert the organiser if the phone is different to the number provided at entry). If you feel unwell from heat or any other cause whilst on the course telephone the organiser before making your way back to the start.\nIf you think it will be inappropriate for you to run in these conditions you can withdraw your entry and gain a credit for a future event – this is self-service online at racesignup.co.uk until 7pm on the day of the event.\nThe start is the other side of Moor Lane from the pub. Do not rush! Please await a safe time to cross Moor Lane\, or cross at the traffic lights 160 metres west up the hill. Parents/guardians to accompany under 16s.\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant traffic\, have good visibility\, and any traffic has been observed at low speeds. We recommend all U16s are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, kerbs; please take care. On the score course\, there are knee height wooden rails around the residential areas on the Horton estate. Some of these are loose so take care stepping / jumping over (not on!) these.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21:16 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nLinear course is suitable for shorts. Score course is also suitable for shorts however you may choose routes with longer vegetation\, with medium risk of nettle sting / bramble scratch – consider full leg cover to avoid this.\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care.\nPonds shall not be entered; they could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run particularly if you wore shorts.\nThe event area is shared with cyclists\, dog walkers and horse riders. Please give them a wide berth and slow down\, and alert in advance if approaching from behind.\nThe emergency phone number is printed on your map should you require assistance. If you are not carrying a mobile\, shout or use a whistle to summon help.\nThe event includes a public park; there are stranger danger risks. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nPlease confidentially disclose existing medical conditions that the organiser should be aware of to the registration team.\nSafety bearing: North back to Chessington Road / Moor Lane. Look up: the pub is located on Moor Lane underneath large electricity pylon/cables.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.

Do not pass the front of the pub before you intend to finish! Due to the nature of the mapping\, not all paths or ponds are shown. \nTerrain: The Score course will take in some of Ashtead’s suburban streets\, and the footpaths and bridleways of Ashtead Common\, a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest\, as well as parts of Epsom Common and the Wells. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 7 events counts towards your total score. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Robert McCaffrey\, rob@trionium.com. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant amounts of traffic\, but may not have good visibility\, and some traffic may be moving at the speed limit. We recommend all children under 16 are shadowed by their parent/guardian. Particular care must be taken when crossing the road in front of the pub – please take your time to cross safely.\nYou must only cross the railway line at the designated crossing points – any crossing of the railway line at any other point (including the level crossing next to Ashtead Station) will result in disqualification!\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, as well as kerbs and uneven footpaths; please take care.\nThe weather may be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available in the pub.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21.20 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nFull leg cover is strongly recommended for the score course – some routes/control choices will encounter longer vegetation\, with certainty of nettle sting / bramble scratch.\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care\nPonds shall not be entered; there could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run.\nThe event area is shared with dog walkers\, cyclists and horse riders. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nPlease confidentially disclose existing medical conditions that the organiser should be aware of to the registration team.\nSafety bearing: South off the common\, over one of the designated safe crossing points\, then arrive on Craddocks Avenue/Barnet Wood Lane\, then head to the pub.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\nElectric fencing is present: Competitors are obliged to cross electric fences only at crossing places or gates.\nCows will be present on the course: Cows are selected for their docility\, and will be very unlikely to react to passing runners. However\, participants are advised to avoid cows all the same.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.
