SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at Ashtead
DESCRIPTION:4th event in our 7-part summer series (subsequent event Wed 8 July\, Epsom). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. Free for MV members. For non-MV members: £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members) \nMeeting point and Après-O: Registration in the rear beer garden of The Woodman\, 238 Barnett Wood Lane\, Ashtead\, KT21 2DA – map. \nYou will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. There will be a group photo soon after the last runner returns. \nGetting there: The pub is ~5-minute walk from Ashtead railway station. The pub has a car park to the rear or use nearby on-street parking. \nNewcomers: we recommend watching this 5 minute video on youtube to introduce the sport and the map. At the event\, we will be happy to provide further introduction and instruction. \nCourses: \nFor both courses\, under 16s are recommended to be accompanied by a parent/guardian. \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. There are no significant road crossings on the course\, but participants must take care when crossing any smaller roads.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. E.g. control “33” will score 30 points\, and control “29” will score 20 points.\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute.\nAll those tied on scores will receive finishing positions (and rank points) based on the least distance run according to MapRun.\n\n\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start from the corner of the beer garden of the pub (https://what3words.com/pigs.album.rainy). Do not pass the front of the pub before you intend to finish! \nFormat: This event will exclusively use the maprun app to record participation – i.e. you will go around the course with either a phone with the maprun app\, or if you have a garmin-compatible watch\, using the Garmin watch maprun app. The app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls; dibbers will not be used. \nIf you have not used maprun before\, we recommend watching this 2 minute video on youtube first. To download the phone app\, choose android phones or apple phones. \nIf you want to use MapRun on a compatible Garmin watch – to avoid taking your phone around with you – please ensure you still have MapRun installed on your phone. This will enable you to start without the PIN. Instructions for the garmin watch app are here \nPlease download the app before arriving and ideally the course too. To download the course in the app: click on ‘Select Event’\, select the third icon along the top (folder) and follow the folder path UK > Mole Valley > 2026 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure can be explained at Assembly/the start. \nMap: A4 1:10\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. Due to the nature of the mapping\, not all paths or ponds are shown. \nTerrain: The Score course will take in some of Ashtead’s suburban streets\, and the footpaths and bridleways of Ashtead Common\, a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest\, as well as parts of Epsom Common and the Wells. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 7 events counts towards your total score. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Robert McCaffrey\, rob@trionium.com. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant amounts of traffic\, but may not have good visibility\, and some traffic may be moving at the speed limit. We recommend all children under 16 are shadowed by their parent/guardian. Particular care must be taken when crossing the road in front of the pub – please take your time to cross safely.\nYou must only cross the railway line at the designated crossing points – any crossing of the railway line at any other point (including the level crossing next to Ashtead Station) will result in disqualification!\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, as well as kerbs and uneven footpaths; please take care.\nThe weather may be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available in the pub.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21.20 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nFull leg cover is strongly recommended for the score course – some routes/control choices will encounter longer vegetation\, with certainty of nettle sting / bramble scratch.\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care\nPonds shall not be entered; there could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run.\nThe event area is shared with dog walkers\, cyclists and horse riders. Please give them a wide berth and slow down\, and alert in advance if approaching from behind.\nThe emergency phone number is printed on your map should you require assistance. If you are not carrying a mobile\, shout or use a whistle to summon help.\nThe event includes a public park; there are stranger danger risks. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nPlease confidentially disclose existing medical conditions that the organiser should be aware of to the registration team.\nSafety bearing: South off the common\, over one of the designated safe crossing points\, then arrive on Craddocks Avenue/Barnet Wood Lane\, then head to the pub.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\nElectric fencing is present: Competitors are obliged to cross electric fences only at crossing places or gates.\nCows will be present on the course: Cows are selected for their docility\, and will be very unlikely to react to passing runners. However\, participants are advised to avoid cows all the same.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.

SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at The Nower
DESCRIPTION:3rd event in our 6-part summer series (subsequent event Thu 2 July\, Ashtead). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nFinal details are now available here… https://mvoc.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Nower-World-Cup-2026-—-Final-Details-20260616.pdf\nPlease note that it is forecast to be 28degC at 18:00 tomorrow. We are still going ahead as the Nower is largely shaded\, but please make sure that you arrive well hydrated and consider carrying water during the run.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. Free for MV members. For non-MV members: £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members) \nMeeting point and Après-O: Registration at The Falkland Arms\, 60 Falkland Rd\, Dorking RH4 3AD – map. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~30-minute walk from Dorking Main/Deepdene railway stations. Parking on nearby streets. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~2.2km linear course\, with 10 controls. No road crossings\, so suitable for juniors.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score with a World Cup 2026 theme. “Score” means there is no set course — your map will show around 30 controls\, you choose which and how many to visit\, and you lose points if you take more than an hour. This event uses a custom progressive scoring system that mirrors the real World Cup bracket. Controls are organised into a group stage and knockout rounds (quarter-finals\, semi-finals and a Final). Knockout controls are worth more points\, but only score if you have qualified for them by visiting enough controls from the relevant group — so route choice is about more than just distance.Full scoring rules\, points values and qualification thresholds will be published in the final details before the event.\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start across the road from the pub. \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used. This means using a smartphone with the MapRun app (latest is version 7)\, or load the MapRunG app onto a compatible Garmin watch. Details of how orienteering works with this app are here. You will download the course to the app ideally before you arrive: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2026 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:5\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map\, map updated 2026 by Ian Roberts. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: The Nower offers a compact mix of fast open grassland and runnable woodland on a steep-sided ridge\, with an intricate path network and pockets of more technical contour and vegetation detail to keep you honest. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 6 events counts towards your total score. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Dan Sullivan\, dansullivan2001@gmail.com. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nThe Yellow Linear course does not cross any road. The Score courses require crossing a small lane passing through the map area — please stop\, look both ways\, and cross with care.\nThe terrain is hilly and wooded throughout. All courses include uneven ground\, woodland paths\, tree roots and steep slopes; please take care\, especially on descents.\nThe area is woodland and heathland and ticks are present. Please check yourself for ticks after your run. If you develop a bull’s-eye rash or flu-like symptoms in the days following the event\, seek medical advice.\nThere is vegetation on parts of the courses including bracken and rough undergrowth. Scratches and stings are possible. Long socks are recommended.\nThe area is used by walkers\, dog walkers and horse riders. Please be considerate to other users\, especially when passing from behind on narrow paths.\nThe weather will be hot. Please arrive well hydrated; we recommend you carry water with you. Re-hydrate at the pub.\nSafety bearing: if you become disorientated\, head East until you reach the open grass area where a member of the team will be stationed at the Start/Finish.\nAll competitors must report back to Download in the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning\, please phone the emergency number printed on your map before the course closing time\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\nNearest Hospitals: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG and East Surrey Hospital\, Canada Avenue\, Redhill\, RH1 5RH

SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at West Epsom Parks
DESCRIPTION:2nd event in our 6-part summer series (subsequent event Mon 22 June\, The Nower\, Dorking). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nSummary – read if nothing else: \n\nEvent solely run on MapRun app (not using dibbers) – download app beforehand.\nScore rules: 3 sets of controls: 30s/40s/50s. Map side 1 has 30s and 40s; side 2 has 50s. Do sets in any order. Swap to next set whenever ready (don’t have to complete a set). Once swapped sets\, can’t swap back! All controls 20pts. 60 mins. Late penalty rate 1pt/secs.\nRemote start/finish – 650m walk from the pub.\nRead the safety notes below.\n\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. Free for MV members. For non-MV members: £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members) [‘juniors’ are under 21] \nNewcomers: we recommend watching this 5 minute video on youtube to introduce the sport and the map. At the event\, we will be happy to provide further introduction and instruction. \nMeeting point: The Cricketers Inn\, 1 Stamford Green Rd\, Epsom KT18 7SR (google maps link). \nStart (and finish) location (if you want to go straight there) is Cuddington Glade\, 650m / 9 minute walk from the pub what3words: analogy.clues.worry / google maps link. \nGetting there: Parking on nearby streets. If coming by train\, Epsom station is ~1.3km away. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) 2.1 km linear course. “Linear” means you must go to the controls in the order specified on the course map. This includes one or two minor road crossings\, but we still need under 16s accompanied\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\, format 30s/40s/50s see below. “Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour (penalty rate 1 point per 2 seconds: don’t be late!).\n\nThere are three ‘sets’ of controls\, numbered in the 30s\, 40s and 50s. Competitors can do the sets in whichever order they want (they can do 30s then 50s then 40s etc.) and they can also swap over to another set whenever they want\, but once a competitor has swapped to another set they cannot swap back to the previous set. You do not have to complete a set before moving on to the next set; you may want to change sets before completion to maximise points. All controls are worth 20 points. \nExample: A competitor decides to start with the 40s and runs to 47\, 42\, 45\, 41. They then decide to switch to the 30s and run to 39\, 38 etc. And then later the 50s. (You don’t have to do all three sets\, you could\, for example\, just do two of the three sets if you wanted). Once they have started on the 30s they will not get any points for reaching further 40s\, as they have moved on from this set. The same applies to the 30s when they start the 50s. \nNote: If you do happen to run past a control in the wrong ‘set’ and MapRun registers this we can amend this in the results afterwards\, so if you are intent on doing as many 50s as possible for example and you register one of the 30s\, this will not affect you continuing on the 50s\, but you will not get any points for the 30s control you visit (unless you visit it later as part of a 30s round). In general we will assume that if you do multiple controls from a set in order that you have started on this set. \nSide 1 of your map has the 30s and 40s. Side 2 (offset to the west) has the 50s. There is a single marked crossing point between the sides. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. \nMap: A4 1:5\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map (2017\, minor updates 2026). Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Mostly urban\, with some parkland. Footwear suggestion: road shoes as the ground is dry. \nClothing: shorts permitted. Courses planned to avoid longer vegetation but this may still be encountered. \nResults: provisional live on the MapRun app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nWater and food: refreshment available at the pub. The pub is kindly enabling us to use their premises for free; please reciprocate with drinks/food purchase. Kitchen closes 9ish. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 6 (or 7\, tbc!) events counts towards your total league score. Top male and female competitors get a trophy at the end of the series! \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Tim Scarbrough\, chair@mvoc.org. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nRoad crossings require care and attention. There are mostly minor road crossings on quiet streets without significant traffic. For the score course\, to switch to/from the 50s set (map side 2) there is a 40mph Horton Lane to cross: please use the marked crossing point on the map (pedestrian crossing).\nYou may encounter long vegetation on the courses but all controls are accessible by paths or across low-cut grass. Shorts are acceptable.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, as well as steps and uneven footpaths; please take care.\nThe weather is forecast ~20 degrees. Please arrive fully hydrated and wear suitable clothing. Consider carrying water with you. Water available at assembly.\nPonds shall not be entered;\nSafety bearing: south to Christ Church Road then east to Stamford Green where the pub is.\nDogs may be encountered; alert owner you’re approaching if from behind and give wide berth.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the finish (if still manned\, if not at the Cricketers\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. Courses close 20:40. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG. \nYou are responsible for your own safety and you take part in this event at your own risk. A quick reminder for newcomers: If you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. For example\, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event\, you would not be covered. You’re very welcome to take part\, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk.

Courses close 20:40. Please download the course to the app before you arrive\, because there is very little signal at Claremont: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2026 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:3\,500 scale waterproof orienteering map (surveyed 2013\, updated 2018\, 2022\, 2026). Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Mostly parkland with an area of school buildings\, and dispersed areas of dense vegetation. Due to the frequent management of the grounds for sport\, the map will not show certain features such as athletics track\, pitches and disk frisbee course. \nClothing: shorts permitted\, may encounter some longer vegetation but this is avoidable. Recommend tick check post-run. \nInfo about road crossings: Route is entirely contained within school groups so no road crossings. Care should be taken around the long driveway from Portsmouth road to parking as this will probably be crossed multiple times and you may encounter other competitors arriving/leaving. Speed limit of 10mph on this road please. \nResults: provisional live on the MapRun app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nWater: water fountains available near start/finish for hydration \nSeries information: Best 4 of 6 (or 7\, tbc!) events counts towards your total league score. Top male and female competitors get a trophy at the end of the series! \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Alex Kendall\, alexkendall72@gmail.com. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nThere are no road crossings but you may cross the driveway into the school from Portsmouth Road. Please look out for vehicles when doing so (conversely\, when you’re driving in\, please watch out for competitors crossing!). The speed limit is 10mph. The linear course should only cross this driveway at the painted zebra crossing (and the course is planned to take you to this crossing).\nAt the southern end of the map there is a cluster of bee-hives. These are marked as out-of-bounds on the map. Competitors with bee/insect sting allergies should make sure they have their Adrenaline Auto-Injector (AAI) with them on their run. The linear course does not go near this area but the Score course competitors might.\nAs a working school\, there is considerable sporting and maintenance equipment which will not be on the map e.g. archery targets\, cricket wicket covers. Please be vigilant for these items as potential trip/collision hazards.\nNorth from the mansion there is a ha-ha which is marked on the map\, but which is nearly invisible from up-slope due to the grass. Please take care not to fall off it!\nThere is some vegetation on the courses but all controls are accessible by paths or across low-cut grass. Shorts are acceptable but as there are deer in the area please make sure you check for ticks after your run.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, as well as steps and uneven footpaths; please take care.\nThe weather may be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available at the start / assembly.\nPonds shall not be entered;\nSafety bearing: look up to the Mansion house and navigate to that.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the Dining room\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. SUMMARY:MV SE League event at White Downs & South Ranmore
DESCRIPTION:South East League Event\, 15th February 2026 at White Downs and South Ranmore\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis National ranking event is on White Downs & South Ranmore\, an area through which the North Downs long-distance path runs. The nearest town is Dorking. The White Downs comprise runnable wooded areas running east-west along the Downs with a slope along its entire southerly length which is steep in places\, enabling fantastic views south across Dorking and to the Greensand ridge. None of the courses will use the very steepest slopes! The competition area is bounded by Ranmore Common Road to the north\, farm land to the south\, White Downs Lane to the west and Denbies Hillside to the east. Pictures of the woodland in the autumn are shown below. The ridge has a number of remaining wartime pillboxes. \nEntriesVia Racesignup: https://racesignup.co.uk/white-downs-south-ranmore-se-league-eventA full range of SE League Courses are available. Anybody can run their preferred course – age classes are those expected by the SE League. \n \nParking \nPlease try to share cars wherever possible as space will be limited. \nMain parking\, on hard standing\, is at St Theresa’s School\, Effingham\, off Critten Lane: ///what3words.com/boot.crops.cost / google maps. From here it’s a 1.5km (25 min) walk to the assembly area. \n\nOver 80s and families with children competing aged 13 and under may park at Stony Rock NT Car Park on Hogden Lane: ///ropes.shells.plots / google maps \n\nIf you’re coming straight to the event on foot or by bicycle\, or are signed up as a helper\, Assembly is at Ranmore West NT car park (participants are NOT to use this car park as we only have permission from the National Trust to use part of it for assembly and it gets busy with local visitors). What3words for assembly: ///broke.with.flute / google maps.  \nPublic TransportDorking Railway Station is almost 5 km from assembly. You are recommended to use the car sharing element of racesignup to arrange a lift. \nRoute to assembly\nThe 1.5km route to Assembly is very muddy in places. Consider wearing wellies and putting on running shoes at Assembly. Please follow signs and tapes to Assembly. You will be guided across Ranmore Common Road to/from the Assembly car park by a marshal. Please take care on the minor road from the school and when crossing Hogden Lane. \nAssembly and facilitiesThe Assembly area will contain Registration/Enquiries\, Download\, First Aid\, a key drop box\, clothing dump. Start and Finish for all courses are adjacent to Assembly.  \nToiletsTwo sets of toilets at the school. Four Portaloos at Assembly. \nEntry CostSenior BOF members £14; Non-BOF member £16 (additional £2 from Monday 9th February) \nSenior and family groups on White/Yellow/Orange £10 \nJuniors and students £7 (additional £1 from Monday 9th February) \nSIAC cards will be available to hire: SI dibber £1\, SIAC dibber £2. \nFamily entries \nFirst timers are very welcome. Look for our greeters in hi-vis jackets. \nYou can go around individually\, in pairs or in a larger family group. From an entries perspective\,  pairs and groups are treated as a single runner – it’s one entry\, you get one map\, one timing chip (“dibber”)  and one finish time listed in the Results.  We charge per “entry” not per person and it’s easiest to enter in advance – see Entering for the first time for more info on how to do this. \nIf you haven’t orienteered before\, we suggest most people start with the yellow course. Young juniors\, say primary school age\, and family groups are better on white. People confident with a map and compass may start on orange. If you find your course too easy\, club policy is to offer you a run on the next course up at no cost\, provided there’s enough time and there are maps available. \nMapFor this top quality area\, the event will use a brand new lidar-based map produced by Philip Gristwood 2024-2025. 1:10\,000 scale for longer courses (green and upwards)\, 1:7\,500 for shorter courses (short green and below) with 5m contours. \nPunchingSI Controls will be used and will be SIAC enabled. It will be a punching start and fly-by finish.   \nCoursesStart times will be from 1030 to 1230 and are as entered on racesignup. Courses will close at 1400. Courses available are shown below. If you plan to do one of the longer courses\, please choose a start time that will ensure you finish before courses close. Entry on the day may be possible while map stocks last and subject to payment (cash/phone signal permitting) – please email to book a map before travelling. \n\n\n\n\n	CourseSE league recommended age classesLength (km)Climb (m)Number of controlsPaper size and map scale\n\n\n\n\n	BlackM2110.729530A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	BrownM20; M35; M40; W219.029525A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short brownM18; M45; M50; W20; W357.715523A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	BlueM16; M55; M60; W18; W40; W456.315522A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short blueM65; M70; W16; W50; W555.39019A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	GreenM75; W60; W654.66517A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short greenM80; W703.73516A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	Very short greenM85+; W75; W80; W85+3.13015A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	Light greenM14; W143.48014A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	OrangeM12; W123.05014A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	YellowM10; W102.43511A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	White1.71010A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n\n\nResultsPlease note that there is very little mobile signal at Assembly so it is unlikely that we will be able to upload results to the server until later in the evening. If there are live results during the event via the QR Code on your printout it will be a bonus. Results will go up on the club web site as soon as possible after the event. \nCateringThe school has kindly arranged for a coffee van to attend in the school car park. Although the mobile signal is weak\, the school have provided wi-fi for card payments and for general internet use (see emailed Final Details for password). \nConductPlease make yourself aware of and follow the British Orienteering Guidance for Participants (revised 19 July 2021). All competitors must wear full leg cover as per British Orienteering Rules published 2024 – page 11 Clothing and Equipment section 8.1. \nDogsAllowed in the Parking and Assembly Areas but not on the courses. Please keep your dog on a lead and clean up after them. \nInsurance \n\nA quick reminder for newcomers: If you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. For example\, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event\, you would not be covered. You’re very welcome to take part\, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. \n\nSafety and risk \nA full risk assessment has been completed by the event team. Orienteering is a physically challenging sport. Competitors take part at their own risk. All competitors are required to carry a whistle.  \nSafety bearing is North until you reach Ranmore Common Road\, then head East or West (according to where you are on your course) to the Assembly car park. \nEmergency phone number is 07434 640229 and is also printed on the map. You will probably have to text as the mobile signal is poor. \nFirst Aid is located in the Assembly car park\, provided by Pulse South Coast. \nThe weather forecast is for light rain all day and temperatures between 5 and 7 degrees; wrap up well and consider wearing a waterproof top. \nAcknowledgements \nThank you to the facilities staff at St Theresa’s School for their tremendous help in providing hard-standing parking\, toilets\, catering and wi-fi. SUMMARY:MV evening score at Buchan Country Park
DESCRIPTION:update 17:20: event is on\, all controls are out. No significant problems in the forest\, although it is a little damp\, and slippery in places – wear your best studs/spikes! Car park is fine. Driving conditions on the way to the event are not great\, there is a lot of surface water. Long delays on the badly drained A264 Horsham/Cranleigh road. \nMole Valley invite you to revisit (the western part of) the scene of the British Middle Distance Championships\, also used for our recent Festive Event. \nPart of the “Kent Night Cup” series\, but you don’t have to be competing in that series to enjoy this event. Come to that\, you don’t have to go to Kent to compete in the series\, this event is in Sussex\, just over the Surrey border\, and there are events in SE London too. \nEntries\nOnline only. Now open on racesignup. Reduced price for the first four people to agree to collect controls (five each).\nMap have been printed\, but you can still enter until midnight on Wednesday 14th\, or when maps maps run out if earlier (racesignup will stop you entering if there are no more maps). \nDirections/parking\nFree parking at the main Buchan Country Park car park\, accessed from the westbound carriageway (only) of the A2220 Horsham Road on the western fringes of Crawley. No “O” signs\, look instead for permanent brown “Buchan Country Park” signposts. The car park is usually locked overnight\, but will be especially opened for us between 18:50 and 19:20\, and again after the event.\nOS grid TQ245347; GPS 51.0982\,-0.2220; What3Words arrow.front.grace\nPostcode RH11 9HQ might work\, or it might take you to the A264\, from which there is no access. \nPublic transport\nBreezehurst Drive West bus stop 500m\, Ifield railway station 3.1km\, Crawley railway station 3.6km\, Gatwick Airport 9.3km.\nMetrobus 10 may be useful for getting to Breezehurst Dr W from Crawley railway station (bus stop easily found just outside the railway station) or Gatwick Airport railway station (bus stop hard to find).\nFrom the Breezehurst Dr W bus stop\, head due south and pick up a tarmac footpath which leads to a footbridge over the A2220 and directly into the Country Park car park. (If using a phone SatNav\, Google doesn’t know this route\, but Mapy does). \nFacilities\nNone (the toilets will be closed overnight). There are toilets available at Pease Pottage Service Area\, off junction 11 of the M23. \nTerrain\nMostly deciduous woodland\, with a couple of lakes. Bracken has largely died down\, and is not mapped. Brambles are present in some areas\, and are mostly well mapped. Controls are in the nicer bits. The area is not flat\, but there are no large hills or very steep slopes. Major paths are as mapped\, minor paths change continually. Hides are not mapped.\nOngoing forestry work has added some horizontal tree-trunks to hop over\, and flattened some of the undergrowth. The planner hasn’t yet found any area that has been rendered significantly more difficult to pass through.\nBuchan is bounded by the A264\, private land and a golf course. \nPrecautions\nTorch and a backup compulsory. A mobile phone with a light will do for backup provided it has adequate battery – carrying a phone is recommended anyway. An emergency phone number (ICE) will be printed on the map. Cagoules\, hat & gloves may be compulsory if the weather is bad. Please ensure that you clear and check your SI dibber before starting (we use the check box to know who has started) and please download as soon as possible after finishing. \nThe usual orienteering hazards are present\, including trees anxious to trip you up or poke your eye out\, and various unevennesses underfoot. There are lakes with deep water\, and the local Angling club are expected to be present. Be aware of fishing equipment projecting over the paths around the lakes. Please don’t upset them by tripping over their rods or falling in the water. \nIn the case of extreme bad weather\, the event may be cancelled. The most likely cause would be high winds leading to a risk of falling trees. If in doubt\, please check the Mole Valley website. \nFormal COVID-19 restrictions are a thing of the past\, but please stay away if you suspect you may have a contagious disease\, and respect any desire of others for social distancing. \nJuniors\nWelcome subject to permission from parent/guardian. \nDogs\nIf under control. Must be kept out of the lakes to avoid upsetting the anglers. \nMap\n1:5\,000\, 5m contours\, ISOM 2017 (ie standard “forest” map)\, by Mike Elliot\, dated 2023 with 2025 updates. (Control-free) map courtesy of the O-Tools website.\nMaps will be printed on A4 waterproof paper. No legend on map. Separate/loose control descriptions are not provided. \nFormat\nA one-hour score event with a mass start at 19:30. 20 controls\, numbered 90 to 109 which may be visited in any order. You score 10 points for each control visited\, and lose 10 points for each minute\, or part of a minute\, late back. \nTo keep the faster people occupied for an hour\, there will be bonus points available. You get an extra 10 points for consecutively punching 2 controls with the same last digit. Thus the sequence 90 – 101 – 100 – 91 scores 40 points for 4 controls\, but 90 – 100 – 101 – 91 scores 60 because of the bonuses for punching 90 & 100 and 101 & 91  consecutively. \nThis scoring system is sometime known as dumbbells because if you draw a lines between pairs of controls\, they look like dumbbells. I haven’t drawn a complete line this time\, as it clutters the map too much\, but I have attached a short line to each control circle in the direction of its pair. \nTo reiterate\, this is NOT one of those events where you have to visit all your 90’s before 100’s or vice versa. You can jump about between 90’s and 100’s as much you like and each control will score. If you are not going for bonus points\, the control codes do not matter at all. \nPunching will be with SI. SIAC (touch-free punching) should be enabled\, so be careful if you pass close to a control that you do not want to punch because it would break a sequence. If you visit a control twice\, only the first visit will be count for scoring purposes. \nSI dibbers (the old type\, not SIAC) are available to hire via the entries system. \nPlease download as soon as you have finished (or given up) to avoid the organiser having a nervous breakdown while organising a search party for you. \nApres-O\nOptional post-event recuperation and announcement of results at Nando’s\, Crawley. OS grid TQ268372; GPS 51.1203\,-0.1893; What3Words react.firmly.colleague; postcode RH10 8LR. Free parking in the adjacent Crawley Leisure Park car park\, accessed from either London Road or Ifield Avenue. No need to book\, just turn up.\nResults will also appear on the Mole Valley and Saxons websites in due course. \nNearest A&E Hospital\nEast Surrey Hospital\, Canada Avenue\, Redhill\, RH1 5RH\nPrincess Royal Hospital\, Lewes Road\, Haywards Heath\, RH16 4EX may be a more convenient direction for some. \nOrganiser/planner\nIan Ditchfield (MV)   mvocevent@gmail.com \nInsurance\nIf you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. For example\, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event\, you would not be covered. You’re very welcome to take part\, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. \nEven for members\, British Orienteering insurance does not cover you for injury or damage to yourself or your own property. \nYou compete at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety
