SUMMARY:MV SE League event at White Downs & South Ranmore
DESCRIPTION:South East League Event\, 15th February 2026 at White Downs and South Ranmore\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis National ranking event is on White Downs & South Ranmore\, an area through which the North Downs long-distance path runs. The nearest town is Dorking. The White Downs comprise runnable wooded areas running east-west along the Downs with a slope along its entire southerly length which is steep in places\, enabling fantastic views south across Dorking and to the Greensand ridge. None of the courses will use the very steepest slopes! The competition area is bounded by Ranmore Common Road to the north\, farm land to the south\, White Downs Lane to the west and Denbies Hillside to the east. Pictures of the woodland in the autumn are shown below. The ridge has a number of remaining wartime pillboxes. \nEntriesVia Racesignup: https://racesignup.co.uk/white-downs-south-ranmore-se-league-eventA full range of SE League Courses are available. Anybody can run their preferred course – age classes are those expected by the SE League. \n \nParking \nPlease try to share cars wherever possible as space will be limited. \nMain parking\, on hard standing\, is at St Theresa’s School\, Effingham\, off Critten Lane: ///what3words.com/boot.crops.cost / google maps. From here it’s a 1.5km (25 min) walk to the assembly area. \n\nOver 80s and families with children competing aged 13 and under may park at Stony Rock NT Car Park on Hogden Lane: ///ropes.shells.plots / google maps \n\nIf you’re coming straight to the event on foot or by bicycle\, or are signed up as a helper\, Assembly is at Ranmore West NT car park (participants are NOT to use this car park as we only have permission from the National Trust to use part of it for assembly and it gets busy with local visitors). What3words for assembly: ///broke.with.flute / google maps.  \nPublic TransportDorking Railway Station is almost 5 km from assembly. You are recommended to use the car sharing element of racesignup to arrange a lift. \nRoute to assembly\nThe 1.5km route to Assembly is very muddy in places. Consider wearing wellies and putting on running shoes at Assembly. Please follow signs and tapes to Assembly. You will be guided across Ranmore Common Road to/from the Assembly car park by a marshal. Please take care on the minor road from the school and when crossing Hogden Lane. \nAssembly and facilitiesThe Assembly area will contain Registration/Enquiries\, Download\, First Aid\, a key drop box\, clothing dump. Start and Finish for all courses are adjacent to Assembly.  \nToiletsTwo sets of toilets at the school. Four Portaloos at Assembly. \nEntry CostSenior BOF members £14; Non-BOF member £16 (additional £2 from Monday 9th February) \nSenior and family groups on White/Yellow/Orange £10 \nJuniors and students £7 (additional £1 from Monday 9th February) \nSIAC cards will be available to hire: SI dibber £1\, SIAC dibber £2. \nFamily entries \nFirst timers are very welcome. Look for our greeters in hi-vis jackets. \nYou can go around individually\, in pairs or in a larger family group. From an entries perspective\,  pairs and groups are treated as a single runner – it’s one entry\, you get one map\, one timing chip (“dibber”)  and one finish time listed in the Results.  We charge per “entry” not per person and it’s easiest to enter in advance – see Entering for the first time for more info on how to do this. \nIf you haven’t orienteered before\, we suggest most people start with the yellow course. Young juniors\, say primary school age\, and family groups are better on white. People confident with a map and compass may start on orange. If you find your course too easy\, club policy is to offer you a run on the next course up at no cost\, provided there’s enough time and there are maps available. \nMapFor this top quality area\, the event will use a brand new lidar-based map produced by Philip Gristwood 2024-2025. 1:10\,000 scale for longer courses (green and upwards)\, 1:7\,500 for shorter courses (short green and below) with 5m contours. \nPunchingSI Controls will be used and will be SIAC enabled. It will be a punching start and fly-by finish.   \nCoursesStart times will be from 1030 to 1230 and are as entered on racesignup. Courses will close at 1400. Courses available are shown below. If you plan to do one of the longer courses\, please choose a start time that will ensure you finish before courses close. Entry on the day may be possible while map stocks last and subject to payment (cash/phone signal permitting) – please email to book a map before travelling. \n\n\n\n\n	CourseSE league recommended age classesLength (km)Climb (m)Number of controlsPaper size and map scale\n\n\n\n\n	BlackM2110.729530A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	BrownM20; M35; M40; W219.029525A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short brownM18; M45; M50; W20; W357.715523A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	BlueM16; M55; M60; W18; W40; W456.315522A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short blueM65; M70; W16; W50; W555.39019A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	GreenM75; W60; W654.66517A3\, 1:10000\n\n\n	Short greenM80; W703.73516A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	Very short greenM85+; W75; W80; W85+3.13015A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	Light greenM14; W143.48014A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	OrangeM12; W123.05014A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	YellowM10; W102.43511A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n	White1.71010A4\, 1:7500\n\n\n\n\nResultsPlease note that there is very little mobile signal at Assembly so it is unlikely that we will be able to upload results to the server until later in the evening. If there are live results during the event via the QR Code on your printout it will be a bonus. Results will go up on the club web site as soon as possible after the event. \nCateringThe school has kindly arranged for a coffee van to attend in the school car park. Although the mobile signal is weak\, the school have provided wi-fi for card payments and for general internet use (see emailed Final Details for password). \nConductPlease make yourself aware of and follow the British Orienteering Guidance for Participants (revised 19 July 2021). All competitors must wear full leg cover as per British Orienteering Rules published 2024 – page 11 Clothing and Equipment section 8.1. \nDogsAllowed in the Parking and Assembly Areas but not on the courses. Please keep your dog on a lead and clean up after them. \nInsurance \n\nA quick reminder for newcomers: If you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. For example\, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event\, you would not be covered. You’re very welcome to take part\, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. \n\nSafety and risk \nA full risk assessment has been completed by the event team. Orienteering is a physically challenging sport. Competitors take part at their own risk. All competitors are required to carry a whistle.  \nSafety bearing is North until you reach Ranmore Common Road\, then head East or West (according to where you are on your course) to the Assembly car park. \nEmergency phone number is 07434 640229 and is also printed on the map. You will probably have to text as the mobile signal is poor. \nFirst Aid is located in the Assembly car park\, provided by Pulse South Coast. \nThe weather forecast is for light rain all day and temperatures between 5 and 7 degrees; wrap up well and consider wearing a waterproof top. \nAcknowledgements \nThank you to the facilities staff at St Theresa’s School for their tremendous help in providing hard-standing parking\, toilets\, catering and wi-fi. SUMMARY:MV evening score at Buchan Country Park
DESCRIPTION:update 17:20: event is on\, all controls are out. No significant problems in the forest\, although it is a little damp\, and slippery in places – wear your best studs/spikes! Car park is fine. Driving conditions on the way to the event are not great\, there is a lot of surface water. Long delays on the badly drained A264 Horsham/Cranleigh road. \nMole Valley invite you to revisit (the western part of) the scene of the British Middle Distance Championships\, also used for our recent Festive Event. \nPart of the “Kent Night Cup” series\, but you don’t have to be competing in that series to enjoy this event. Come to that\, you don’t have to go to Kent to compete in the series\, this event is in Sussex\, just over the Surrey border\, and there are events in SE London too. \nEntries\nOnline only. Now open on racesignup. Reduced price for the first four people to agree to collect controls (five each).\nMap have been printed\, but you can still enter until midnight on Wednesday 14th\, or when maps maps run out if earlier (racesignup will stop you entering if there are no more maps). \nDirections/parking\nFree parking at the main Buchan Country Park car park\, accessed from the westbound carriageway (only) of the A2220 Horsham Road on the western fringes of Crawley. No “O” signs\, look instead for permanent brown “Buchan Country Park” signposts. The car park is usually locked overnight\, but will be especially opened for us between 18:50 and 19:20\, and again after the event.\nOS grid TQ245347; GPS 51.0982\,-0.2220; What3Words arrow.front.grace\nPostcode RH11 9HQ might work\, or it might take you to the A264\, from which there is no access. \nPublic transport\nBreezehurst Drive West bus stop 500m\, Ifield railway station 3.1km\, Crawley railway station 3.6km\, Gatwick Airport 9.3km.\nMetrobus 10 may be useful for getting to Breezehurst Dr W from Crawley railway station (bus stop easily found just outside the railway station) or Gatwick Airport railway station (bus stop hard to find).\nFrom the Breezehurst Dr W bus stop\, head due south and pick up a tarmac footpath which leads to a footbridge over the A2220 and directly into the Country Park car park. (If using a phone SatNav\, Google doesn’t know this route\, but Mapy does). \nFacilities\nNone (the toilets will be closed overnight). There are toilets available at Pease Pottage Service Area\, off junction 11 of the M23. \nTerrain\nMostly deciduous woodland\, with a couple of lakes. Bracken has largely died down\, and is not mapped. Brambles are present in some areas\, and are mostly well mapped. Controls are in the nicer bits. The area is not flat\, but there are no large hills or very steep slopes. Major paths are as mapped\, minor paths change continually. Hides are not mapped.\nOngoing forestry work has added some horizontal tree-trunks to hop over\, and flattened some of the undergrowth. The planner hasn’t yet found any area that has been rendered significantly more difficult to pass through.\nBuchan is bounded by the A264\, private land and a golf course. \nPrecautions\nTorch and a backup compulsory. A mobile phone with a light will do for backup provided it has adequate battery – carrying a phone is recommended anyway. An emergency phone number (ICE) will be printed on the map. Cagoules\, hat & gloves may be compulsory if the weather is bad. Please ensure that you clear and check your SI dibber before starting (we use the check box to know who has started) and please download as soon as possible after finishing. \nThe usual orienteering hazards are present\, including trees anxious to trip you up or poke your eye out\, and various unevennesses underfoot. There are lakes with deep water\, and the local Angling club are expected to be present. Be aware of fishing equipment projecting over the paths around the lakes. Please don’t upset them by tripping over their rods or falling in the water. \nIn the case of extreme bad weather\, the event may be cancelled. The most likely cause would be high winds leading to a risk of falling trees. If in doubt\, please check the Mole Valley website. \nFormal COVID-19 restrictions are a thing of the past\, but please stay away if you suspect you may have a contagious disease\, and respect any desire of others for social distancing. \nJuniors\nWelcome subject to permission from parent/guardian. \nDogs\nIf under control. Must be kept out of the lakes to avoid upsetting the anglers. \nMap\n1:5\,000\, 5m contours\, ISOM 2017 (ie standard “forest” map)\, by Mike Elliot\, dated 2023 with 2025 updates. (Control-free) map courtesy of the O-Tools website.\nMaps will be printed on A4 waterproof paper. No legend on map. Separate/loose control descriptions are not provided. \nFormat\nA one-hour score event with a mass start at 19:30. 20 controls\, numbered 90 to 109 which may be visited in any order. You score 10 points for each control visited\, and lose 10 points for each minute\, or part of a minute\, late back. \nTo keep the faster people occupied for an hour\, there will be bonus points available. You get an extra 10 points for consecutively punching 2 controls with the same last digit. Thus the sequence 90 – 101 – 100 – 91 scores 40 points for 4 controls\, but 90 – 100 – 101 – 91 scores 60 because of the bonuses for punching 90 & 100 and 101 & 91  consecutively. \nThis scoring system is sometime known as dumbbells because if you draw a lines between pairs of controls\, they look like dumbbells. I haven’t drawn a complete line this time\, as it clutters the map too much\, but I have attached a short line to each control circle in the direction of its pair. \nTo reiterate\, this is NOT one of those events where you have to visit all your 90’s before 100’s or vice versa. You can jump about between 90’s and 100’s as much you like and each control will score. If you are not going for bonus points\, the control codes do not matter at all. \nPunching will be with SI. SIAC (touch-free punching) should be enabled\, so be careful if you pass close to a control that you do not want to punch because it would break a sequence. If you visit a control twice\, only the first visit will be count for scoring purposes. \nSI dibbers (the old type\, not SIAC) are available to hire via the entries system. \nPlease download as soon as you have finished (or given up) to avoid the organiser having a nervous breakdown while organising a search party for you. \nApres-O\nOptional post-event recuperation and announcement of results at Nando’s\, Crawley. OS grid TQ268372; GPS 51.1203\,-0.1893; What3Words react.firmly.colleague; postcode RH10 8LR. Free parking in the adjacent Crawley Leisure Park car park\, accessed from either London Road or Ifield Avenue. No need to book\, just turn up.\nResults will also appear on the Mole Valley and Saxons websites in due course. \nNearest A&E Hospital\nEast Surrey Hospital\, Canada Avenue\, Redhill\, RH1 5RH\nPrincess Royal Hospital\, Lewes Road\, Haywards Heath\, RH16 4EX may be a more convenient direction for some. \nOrganiser/planner\nIan Ditchfield (MV)   mvocevent@gmail.com \nInsurance\nIf you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. For example\, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event\, you would not be covered. You’re very welcome to take part\, but please be aware that you do so at your own risk. \nEven for members\, British Orienteering insurance does not cover you for injury or damage to yourself or your own property. \nYou compete at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety

The printed map does not have a full legend; a full ISSprOM 2019-2 legend is at maprunner.co.uk/ \n \nThe map does show uncrossable/out-of-bounds features. Crossing out-of-bounds/uncrossable features will result in disqualification. Incursion on private land (olive green) can lead to complaints to you/us\, so please avoid. You must not cross such features even if this appears to be physically possible. Course 7 does not cross any roads (but does cross a driveway entrance) apart from the marshalled timed-out crossing of a major road at a pedestrian crossing. Both courses 6 and 7 are largely within parkland\, with use of pavements of adjacent roads. The courses have been checked by the Controller. We can arrange for the course to be shown to a parent at registration if there is any concern for a child’s safety. Adults who are shadowing: to remain competitive\, complete your own run first. \nThere will be no String course but there is a children’s play area in Roseberry Park. \nPlease be courteous to other park users: it is a bank holiday weekend. E.g. avoid crossing any spontaneous (i.e. unmapped!) sports games in the parks or family gatherings etc. \nCompetitors under 16 on the day of the event are not allowed to compete on courses 1 to 5 unless accompanied by an adult. \nSafety Briefing: \n\nCompetitors take part at their own risk and are always responsible for their own safety.\nIt is part of the ethos of our sport that competitors are expected to stop and help a fellow injured competitor. If it is unlikely the competitor will be able to return to the event centre\, officials should be notified as soon as possible.\nAll runners will encounter uneven surfaces – please take care.\nTake care negotiating steps especially on descent. Particularly uneven steps and after and during rain when they could be slippery.\nThe competition takes place in an urban area alongside members of the public with numerous road crossings necessary. The speed limit within the competition area does not exceed 30mph. Please take care when running and look out for moving traffic\, bicycles\, members of the public. Please use pedestrian crossings if possible. Brightly coloured clothing is recommended to mitigate the risk of collisions. Please take particular care not to obstruct other members of the public when running around unsighted corners\, along narrow paths and emerging from narrow alleys onto pavements. Local residents have priority close to their houses even if they obstruct your progress. Please do not alarm them.\nWithin all open spaces you may encounter dogs being walked.\nWithin Rosebery Park there is a pond. Most courses\, including the junior courses\, go near/alongside this feature\, on paths. Parents\, please remind your children to take particular care to remain on the path alongside this.\nParticularly for junior competitors\, there is as ever the risk of stranger danger. Parents: Please remind your juniors to exercise vigilance. There will be no sad/smiley faces on course 7 that would otherwise inform competitors they have made a wrong/correct turn or navigation decision. See below: Safeguarding Child Protection & Photography\nWeather-related risks: running surfaces may be slippery after or during rain. There is a risk of dehydration in hot conditions so please hydrate before and after your run. Drinking water will be available at the Event Centre. If it is forecast to be very hot\, a drink station will be provided at a manned control.\nYOU MUST DOWNLOAD\, even if you retire\, so we know you have returned safely.\nPlease make us aware at enquiries of existing relevant medical conditions and unexpected reactions/allergies that we should be aware of before running.\nSafety bearing back to the Event Centre varies depending on where you are on the course. If lost\, please ask a member of the public or another orienteer to direct you to Woodcote Grove.\nAny risk of dangerous litter\, potential for broken glass and used needles at controls will be minimised by a specific check for these on the lead up to and on the morning of the event. However\, please remain vigilant for this risk whilst running on other parts of the course.\nThere will be a First Aid kit at Enquiries/Download. This will operate on a “self-help” basis\, although there will be a club First-Aider available.\nThe nearest A&E hospital is Epsom General Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom KT18 7EG (500m SW of Rosebery Park)\nCovid: Please follow the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.\nCourses close at 14:30\n\nA full risk assessment has been prepared and will be available upon request at Download/Enquiries. British Orienteering 3rd Party insurance does not cover non-residents of the United Kingdom – such individuals should have their own cover. \nTiming and control punching: SportIdent (SI) punching will be used throughout with SIAC enabled for all controls EXCEPT the Start and Finish.  All competitors will need to “dib” at both the Start and the safety control after the Finish. Most controls will be attached to “street furniture” of some sort. If dibbing the control please ensure you dib from the front – they do not always work when punched from the rear.  Others\, including the Finish\, will be mounted on standard orienteering stakes. There will be a SIAC battery test at the Start. However\, if a SIAC “dibber” battery fails then “dib” at all controls. \nStarts: One start for all courses\, approximately 10-minute walk from Event Centre\, in Rosebery Park. Start times have been selected by competitors and are from 10.30 to 12.30. If you are late for your selected start\, you will be allowed to start when there is a free start time for your course. There are no toilets at the start. Juniors on courses 6 & 7 must start between 11:30 and 12:30. \n\nNote: Novices on all courses well before 12:30pm\, as a safety measure and to avoid possible disappointment\, as courses close at 14:30. \nStart procedure: \n\nBefore call-up: SIAC Battery test unit and clear stations. Course 7 maps will be available to course 7 competitors\nCall up -4 minutes (1st box): Check Station. SIAC users are reminded that the Check Station enables the contactless operation of their dibbers.\n-3 minutes (2nd box): Control descriptions and SIAC “working test” box. If your SIAC does not work on this box then go back (quickly!) to clear\, check and test again.\n-2 minutes (3rd box): Blank maps\, appropriate for each course/paper size as listed under course details.\nThe start line is at the front of the 4th and final box (-1 minute). All competitors need to “dib” at the Start control and then collect the map from under the course box.\nPlease make sure you know which course you are running and pick up the correct map! Those with double sided maps should ensure they follow the correct side first. i.e. where Control 1 follows the start triangle.\n\n\nFinish: Punching Finish for ALL\, approximately 40m from the start in Rosebery Park. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD EVEN IF YOU ABANDON YOUR RACE. Return any hired dibber. If you are involved in any incidents involving damage\, injury or a dispute with a member of the public\, please let us know when you report to download. Courses close at 14.30\, after which controls will be collected. \nClothing: Shorts and running vests are permitted – dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. Conventional road-running footwear is recommended; studs are inappropriate. All runners are advised to wear a bright coloured top for safety. \nResults: Provisional results will be live during the event.  The link will be on your split’s printout via a QR code. Final results will be published asap after the event at www.mvoc.org \nRefreshments: No water or food will be provided at the Finish control\, but water will be available at the Event Centre nearby. There are numerous food outlets in Epsom town centre. \n\nSafeguarding\, child protection and photography: Competitors are permitted to carry a mobile phone for use in an emergency\, and children and vulnerable adults are encouraged to do so.  The Emergency Contact number is printed on the competition map. \n\nThe lost child handover point is the Enquiries Desk at the Event Centre. \n\n\nJuniors should be advised that if they feel concerned about their safety at any point\, they should approach an adult competitor for assistance. If adult competitors become aware of a suspicious incident or are approached by a concerned child\, it is their responsibility to provide immediate assistance.  Any incident must be reported to Enquiries. \n\n\nAny under 16’s travelling on their own should notify Enquiries of their attendance. \n\n\nIn accordance with British Orienteering Child Welfare Policy and Procedures\, we request that any person wishing to engage in any video\, zoom or close-range photography should read and comply with Section 4.8 of British Orienteering’s O Safe Policy. Organisers reserve the right to challenge anyone who is giving cause for concern.  If anyone has concerns about inappropriate or intrusive photography\, they should raise them with the Organiser\, contactable via Enquiries.  Official photographers are required to register with British Orienteering and wear a special Hi-Viz vest. Anyone who does not wish to have their photo taken should obtain a form from Enquiries or the BOF website and hand it in to Enquiries \n\n\nAny last-minute changes\, including postponement due to the forecast of dangerous weather conditions\, will be circulated to competitors by email via racesignup. \nComplaints and protests: If you have a complaint about your course\, or any other aspect of the event\, please come and discuss it initially with the event officials (Organiser and/or Planner) at download/enquiries. We will involve the Controller if necessary if the issue is related to the fairness of the course. We will endeavour to resolve all issues on the day. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. There will be a group photo soon after the last runner returns\, and a trophy presentation. \nGetting there: The pub is 1.1km from Ashtead railway station. The pub has a small car park or use nearby parking e.g. off Grove Road\, or in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park across the busy A24. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. There are several minor road crossings – those under 16 must be accompanied at all times.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. E.g. control “33” will score 30 points\, and control “29” will score 20 points.\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute.\nAll those tied on scores will receive finishing positions based on the least distance run according to MapRun.\n\n\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start and finish at the back of the pub. \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used. This means using a smartphone with the MapRun app (latest is version 7)\, or load the MapRunG app onto a compatible Garmin watch. Details of how orienteering works with this app are here. You will download the course to the app ideally before you arrive: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2025 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:7500 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Mixed parkland with extensive path network and urban. Full leg cover is not required. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Robert McCaffrey\, rob@trionium.com. \n\nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant amounts of traffic\, but may not have good visibility\, and some traffic will be moving at the speed limit. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, kerbs; please take care.\nThe weather may be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available in the pub.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 20.53 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nCourses suitable for shorts. You may choose routes with longer vegetation\, with small risk of nettle sting / bramble scratch.\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care.\nPonds shall not be entered; they could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run particularly if you wore shorts.\nThe event area is shared with dog walkers\, fishermen\, cyclists and horse riders. Please give them a wide berth and slow down\, and alert in advance if approaching from behind.\nThe emergency phone number is printed on your map should you require assistance. SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening at Horton Country Park
DESCRIPTION:3rd event in our 4-part summer series (subsequent event 29 July Ashtead). App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members)\, or £4 for pairs/groups/families \nMeeting point and Après-O: Registration in the beer garden of The William Bourne pub\, Moor Lane\, Chessington\, KT9 2BQ – map. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~10-minute walk from Chessington North railway station. The pub has a small (20-25 space) car park or use nearby on-street parking e.g. on Chessington Hill Park. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. The route is mostly in Horton Country Park. There are three minor road crossings\, parents of children please note. Please note\, crossing the Chessington Road from the pub beer garden to the start on the other side of the road is needed.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\, odds and evens format.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. E.g. control “33” will score 30 points\, and control “29” will score 20 points.\n“Odds and evens” means you start with either odd-numbered or even numbered controls and may switch once to the other. You don’t need to visit all even-numbered controls or all odd-numbered controls and could just visit one block of controls.\n\nThe first block is determined by whether two odd-numbered or two even-numbered controls are visited before two of the other (or stated another way\, of the first three non-duplicated controls visited\, two are even or two are odd).\nThe flip to the second block is signalled by visiting two controls in the second block in succession\, i.e. two odd-numbered controls after an initial block of even-numbered controls or vice versa. (There is no “switch” control if you have previously run “odds and evens” event with a switch control.)\nControls of the wrong parity in a block (i.e. odds visited in an even block and vice versa) do not count towards the points score but can be visited in the correct block for points. These controls are listed as “Extras” in the results table.\n\n\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute.\n\n\n\nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start across the road from the pub. \nMap: A4 1:10\,000 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. No separate control descriptions – they are printed on the map. \nTerrain: Parkland with extensive path network and some urban sections of Clarenden Park. The courses have been designed to avoid the need for full leg cover as the courses are path-based. It is possible on the score course that you may choose (but don’t have to!) to go through long grass. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by Tim Scarbrough chair@mvoc.org. \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\nThe start is the other side of Moor Lane from the pub. Do not rush! Please await a safe time to cross Moor Lane\, or cross at the traffic lights 160 metres west up the hill. Parents/guardians to accompany under 16s.\nAll courses cross minor roads: watch out for traffic and take care crossing these roads. For parents/guardians of under 16s: these minor roads do not have significant traffic\, have good visibility\, and any traffic has been observed at low speeds. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nYou will encounter trip hazards on all courses\, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, kerbs; please take care.\nThe weather is forecast to be very warm. Please arrive fully hydrated. We recommend you carry water with you. Water available in the pub.\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21:15 whereas courses close at 20:40.\nCourses suitable for shorts. You may choose routes with longer vegetation\, with small risk of nettle sting / bramble scratch\, so could consider full leg cover on the odds & evens course – NB the weather forecast is warm (27 degrees at 7pm).\nYou may encounter litter which could include unsafe objects\, please take care.\nPonds shall not be entered; they could be sticky mud this time of year.\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run particularly if you wore shorts.\nThe event area is shared with dog walkers and horse riders. Please give them a wide berth and slow down\, and alert in advance if approaching from behind.\nThe emergency phone number is printed on your map should you require assistance. If you are not carrying a mobile\, shout or use a whistle to summon help.\nThe event includes a public park; there are stranger danger risks. We recommend all children are shadowed by their parent/guardian.\nPlease confidentially disclose existing medical conditions that the organiser should be aware of to the registration team.\nSafety bearing: North back to Chessington Road / Moor Lane. Look up: the pub is located on Moor Lane underneath large electricity pylon/cables.\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the pub\, even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.30pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.

This is why the rules of orienteering say that you MUST wear full leg and abdomen cover in the forest. Full arm cover is also recommended. Please check for ticks after running and seek medical advice if you develop flu like symptoms or a spreading circular rash after being bitten. There is an excellent government leaflet here. \nInsurance: All of our events are registered with British Orienteering and are covered by their public liability insurance; individuals are advised to consider their own private accident insurance. \nPlease note that the insurance only covers those registered as being part of the event so if you are taking part as a group or are accompanying / shadowing a child please make sure you register the names of everyone taking part as you sign up. \nPrivacy: when participating in our events/activities your name may appear in the results section of this website or in newspaper reports. Read our data protection page to see how we look after your personal data.
