SUMMARY:MV SE League event at White Downs & South Ranmore
DESCRIPTION:South East League Event\, 15th February 2026 at White Downs and South Ranmore\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis National ranking event is on White Downs & South Ranmore\, an area through which the North Downs long-distance path runs. The nearest town is Dorking. The White Downs comprise runnable wooded areas running east-west along the Downs with a slope along its entire southerly length which is steep in places\, enabling fantastic views south across Dorking and to the Greensand ridge. None of the courses will use the very steepest slopes! The competition area is bounded by Ranmore Common Road to the north\, farm land to the south\, White Downs Lane to the west and Denbies Hillside to the east. Pictures of the woodland in the autumn are shown below. From an entries perspective\,  pairs and groups are treated as a single runner – it’s one entry\, you get one map\, one timing chip (“dibber”)  and one finish time listed in the Results.  We charge per “entry” not per person and it’s easiest to enter in advance – see Entering for the first time for more info on how to do this. \nIf you haven’t orienteered before\, we suggest most people start with the yellow course. Young juniors\, say primary school age\, and family groups are better on white. People confident with a map and compass may start on orange. Although the mobile signal is weak\, the school have provided wi-fi for card payments and for general internet use (see emailed Final Details for password). \nConductPlease make yourself aware of and follow the British Orienteering Guidance for Participants (revised 19 July 2021). All competitors must wear full leg cover as per British Orienteering Rules published 2024 – page 11 Clothing and Equipment section 8.1. \nDogsAllowed in the Parking and Assembly Areas but not on the courses. Please keep your dog on a lead and clean up after them. \nInsurance \n\nA quick reminder for newcomers: If you’re not currently a member of British Orienteering\, you won’t be covered by the organisation’s public liability insurance for this event. Continue south across the junction of the one-way system on to Ashley Road. Continue south on Ashley Road until Rosebery Park is on your right-hand side; the start is at the southern end of Rosebery Park. It will be possible to go straight to the start\,\, a bag drop will be established near the finish; otherwise\, the event centre (and download) is accessed a further 5-10mins walk down Ashley Road. \nHelp and advice:\nThere will be plenty of helpers that are able to give advice etc from 10.30 onwards. Course 7 does not cross any roads (but does cross a driveway entrance) apart from the marshalled timed-out crossing of a major road at a pedestrian crossing. Both courses 6 and 7 are largely within parkland\, with use of pavements of adjacent roads. The courses have been checked by the Controller. We can arrange for the course to be shown to a parent at registration if there is any concern for a child’s safety. Adults who are shadowing: to remain competitive\, complete your own run first. \nThere will be no String course but there is a children’s play area in Roseberry Park. \nPlease be courteous to other park users: it is a bank holiday weekend. E.g. avoid crossing any spontaneous (i.e. unmapped!) sports games in the parks or family gatherings etc. \nCompetitors under 16 on the day of the event are not allowed to compete on courses 1 to 5 unless accompanied by an adult. \nSafety Briefing: \n\nCompetitors take part at their own risk and are always responsible for their own safety.\nIt is part of the ethos of our sport that competitors are expected to stop and help a fellow injured competitor. If it is unlikely the competitor will be able to return to the event centre\, officials should be notified as soon as possible.\nAll runners will encounter uneven surfaces – please take care.\nTake care negotiating steps especially on descent. Particularly uneven steps and after and during rain when they could be slippery.\nThe competition takes place in an urban area alongside members of the public with numerous road crossings necessary. The speed limit within the competition area does not exceed 30mph. Please take care when running and look out for moving traffic\, bicycles\, members of the public. Please use pedestrian crossings if possible. Brightly coloured clothing is recommended to mitigate the risk of collisions. Please take particular care not to obstruct other members of the public when running around unsighted corners\, along narrow paths and emerging from narrow alleys onto pavements. Local residents have priority close to their houses even if they obstruct your progress. Please do not alarm them.\nWithin all open spaces you may encounter dogs being walked.\nWithin Rosebery Park there is a pond. Most courses\, including the junior courses\, go near/alongside this feature\, on paths. Parents\, please remind your children to take particular care to remain on the path alongside this.\nParticularly for junior competitors\, there is as ever the risk of stranger danger. Parents: Please remind your juniors to exercise vigilance. There will be no sad/smiley faces on course 7 that would otherwise inform competitors they have made a wrong/correct turn or navigation decision. See below: Safeguarding Child Protection & Photography\nWeather-related risks: running surfaces may be slippery after or during rain. There is a risk of dehydration in hot conditions so please hydrate before and after your run. Drinking water will be available at the Event Centre. If it is forecast to be very hot\, a drink station will be provided at a manned control.\nYOU MUST DOWNLOAD\, even if you retire\, so we know you have returned safely.\nPlease make us aware at enquiries of existing relevant medical conditions and unexpected reactions/allergies that we should be aware of before running.\nSafety bearing back to the Event Centre varies depending on where you are on the course. If lost\, please ask a member of the public or another orienteer to direct you to Woodcote Grove.\nAny risk of dangerous litter\, potential for broken glass and used needles at controls will be minimised by a specific check for these on the lead up to and on the morning of the event. However\, please remain vigilant for this risk whilst running on other parts of the course.\nThere will be a First Aid kit at Enquiries/Download. This will operate on a “self-help” basis\, although there will be a club First-Aider available.\nThe nearest A&E hospital is Epsom General Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom KT18 7EG (500m SW of Rosebery Park)\nCovid: Please follow the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.\nCourses close at 14:30\n\nA full risk assessment has been prepared and will be available upon request at Download/Enquiries. British Orienteering 3rd Party insurance does not cover non-residents of the United Kingdom – such individuals should have their own cover. \nTiming and control punching: SportIdent (SI) punching will be used throughout with SIAC enabled for all controls EXCEPT the Start and Finish.  All competitors will need to “dib” at both the Start and the safety control after the Finish. Most controls will be attached to “street furniture” of some sort. If dibbing the control please ensure you dib from the front – they do not always work when punched from the rear.  Others\, including the Finish\, will be mounted on standard orienteering stakes. There will be a SIAC battery test at the Start. However\, if a SIAC “dibber” battery fails then “dib” at all controls. \nStarts: One start for all courses\, approximately 10-minute walk from Event Centre\, in Rosebery Park. Start times have been selected by competitors and are from 10.30 to 12.30. If you are late for your selected start\, you will be allowed to start when there is a free start time for your course. There are no toilets at the start. Juniors on courses 6 & 7 must start between 11:30 and 12:30. \n\nNote: Novices on all courses well before 12:30pm\, as a safety measure and to avoid possible disappointment\, as courses close at 14:30. \nStart procedure: \n\nBefore call-up: SIAC Battery test unit and clear stations. Course 7 maps will be available to course 7 competitors\nCall up -4 minutes (1st box): Check Station. SIAC users are reminded that the Check Station enables the contactless operation of their dibbers.\n-3 minutes (2nd box): Control descriptions and SIAC “working test” box. If your SIAC does not work on this box then go back (quickly!) to clear\, check and test again.\n-2 minutes (3rd box): Blank maps\, appropriate for each course/paper size as listed under course details.\nThe start line is at the front of the 4th and final box (-1 minute). All competitors need to “dib” at the Start control and then collect the map from under the course box.\nPlease make sure you know which course you are running and pick up the correct map! Those with double sided maps should ensure they follow the correct side first. i.e. where Control 1 follows the start triangle.\n\n\nFinish: Punching Finish for ALL\, approximately 40m from the start in Rosebery Park. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD EVEN IF YOU ABANDON YOUR RACE. Return any hired dibber. If you are involved in any incidents involving damage\, injury or a dispute with a member of the public\, please let us know when you report to download. Courses close at 14.30\, after which controls will be collected. \nClothing: Shorts and running vests are permitted – dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. Conventional road-running footwear is recommended; studs are inappropriate. All runners are advised to wear a bright coloured top for safety. \nResults: Provisional results will be live during the event.  The link will be on your split’s printout via a QR code. Final results will be published asap after the event at www.mvoc.org \nRefreshments: No water or food will be provided at the Finish control\, but water will be available at the Event Centre nearby. There are numerous food outlets in Epsom town centre. \n\nSafeguarding\, child protection and photography: Competitors are permitted to carry a mobile phone for use in an emergency\, and children and vulnerable adults are encouraged to do so.  The Emergency Contact number is printed on the competition map. \n\nThe lost child handover point is the Enquiries Desk at the Event Centre. \n\n\nJuniors should be advised that if they feel concerned about their safety at any point\, they should approach an adult competitor for assistance. If adult competitors become aware of a suspicious incident or are approached by a concerned child\, it is their responsibility to provide immediate assistance.  Any incident must be reported to Enquiries. \n\n\nAny under 16’s travelling on their own should notify Enquiries of their attendance. \n\n\nIn accordance with British Orienteering Child Welfare Policy and Procedures\, we request that any person wishing to engage in any video\, zoom or close-range photography should read and comply with Section 4.8 of British Orienteering’s O Safe Policy. Organisers reserve the right to challenge anyone who is giving cause for concern.  If anyone has concerns about inappropriate or intrusive photography\, they should raise them with the Organiser\, contactable via Enquiries.  Official photographers are required to register with British Orienteering and wear a special Hi-Viz vest. Anyone who does not wish to have their photo taken should obtain a form from Enquiries or the BOF website and hand it in to Enquiries \n\n\nAny last-minute changes\, including postponement due to the forecast of dangerous weather conditions\, will be circulated to competitors by email via racesignup. \nComplaints and protests: If you have a complaint about your course\, or any other aspect of the event\, please come and discuss it initially with the event officials (Organiser and/or Planner) at download/enquiries. We will involve the Controller if necessary if the issue is related to the fairness of the course. We will endeavour to resolve all issues on the day. DESCRIPTION:This is a Southern England Orienteering Urban League (SEOUL) event based in the medieval market town of Dorking\, situated within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty \nEntry: racesignup.co.uk\nSeniors £10\, Juniors (u21) and Students £4 by 18th August.\nSeniors £12\, Juniors / Students £6 between 19th & 23rd August. Entry on day (subject to map availability\, payment by card only). £2 surcharge for non-BOF Seniors. SI-Card hire £1 (lost units £30) or contactless SIAC hire £2.50 (lost units £65). \nEvent Centre: Surrey FA\, Meadowbank Football Ground\, Mill Lane\, Dorking.
