DESCRIPTION:This is the second event of a series of 8 winter evening Street Orienteering events MVOC are organising on a monthly basis from September to April. Each event will be a 1-hour or 40 minute score event and a league table will be compiled from the results of each event as they proceed. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. There will be a group photo soon after the last runner returns\, and a trophy presentation. \nGetting there: The pub is 1.1km from Ashtead railway station. The pub has a small car park or use nearby parking e.g. off Grove Road\, or in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall car park across the busy A24. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. There are several minor road crossings – those under 16 must be accompanied at all times.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. Points per control is the control number rounded down to the nearest multiple of 10. SUMMARY:MV GLOSS at Nonsuch Park
DESCRIPTION:The Greater London Orienteering Summer Series (‘GLOSS’) is an annual Summer inter-club competition between orienteering clubs in and around London. \nThere are two courses: the GLOSS course which is about 3½ to 4½ km (with optional extension to around 6 km) and is of moderate navigational difficulty\, and a ‘Yellow’ course which is about 2km with easier navigation. \nThe best six handicapped times for each club at each event score points\, which are totalled at the end of the season. GLOSS uses a handicap system in determining individual performance\, based on how well you perform against the average of your British Orienteering Ranking Scheme scores. \nMole Valley Orienteering Club welcomes you to Nonsuch Park\, historic site of King Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace and deer park. Nonsuch Park today offers flat partially wooded parkland with rough open areas\, distinctive trees and ponds. Café and toilets available. \nOn offer is the GLOSS (Light Green) course at 3.6km with optional extension (6km total)\, and a Yellow course at 2.1km suitable for juniors/beginners. \n \nEntries: at racesignup.co.uk  Price rise at midnight Sunday 6th July. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~10-minute walk from Chessington North railway station. The pub has a small (20-25 space) car park or use nearby on-street parking e.g. on Chessington Hill Park. \nCourses: \n\nFor beginners/newcomers: a simple (“yellow” standard) ~3km linear course\, with 10 controls. The route is mostly in Horton Country Park. There are three minor road crossings\, parents of children please note. Please note\, crossing the Chessington Road from the pub beer garden to the start on the other side of the road is needed.\nFor the experienced or adventurous: 1-hour score\, odds and evens format.\n\n“Score” means there is no set course. App-based (MapRun) low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\n \nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members)\, or £4 for pairs/groups/families \n Meeting point and Après-O: Registration will take place at the outdoor area of the Harrow Inn Cheam\, High Street\, Cheam\, SM3 8RL – map\, where you can leave your bags during your run\, and enjoy good food and drink after your run. \nGetting there: The pub offers limited parking at the rear.  Kingsway Road carpark (3min walk) offers an evening tariff of £1.50 between 18:30 and 20:00 – map.  Closest railway station is Cheam\, follow Station Way from north exit (5min walk). \nCourses: For the experienced: 60-minute score course using Waikato scoring rules.  For beginners/newcomers a simpler ~3km linear course. “Score” means there is no set course.  Your map will show several controls\, and you choose which and how many to visit. Points are gained for visiting controls and points are lost for taking more than one hour. “Waikato” scoring means some controls are only available within certain timeframe. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:30. Start 3-minute walk from the registration point. Walk to Start point involves crossing a busy crossroads.  Junior participants (under-16) must be accompanied by an adult when crossing.  All participants should use the formal crossing points. \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. SUMMARY:Mole evening score event on Epsom Downs
DESCRIPTION:Mole Valley invite you to the world famous racecourse for an evening score event. \nPart of the “Kent Night Cup” series\, but you don’t have to be competing in that series to enjoy this event. Come to that\, you don’t have to go to Kent to compete in the series\, there are also be events in Sussex and SE London. \nEven though the main course crosses roads\, under-16 juniors are still permitted. There will be a smaller mapped area for U16’s\, with no road crossings\, and an adjustment to the scoring system to compensate for not having access to all the controls. Note however that unaccompanied night orienteering is not regarded as suitable for young children. All under-18’s must have parent/guardian permission to enter. \nDirections/Parking\nFree parking at the “Tea Hut” car park on Epsom Downs\, accessed from Old London Road immediately north of its roundabout junction with the B290. W3W hired.clues.truth; GPS 51.31207\,-0.24541; OS TQ223584. Postcode KT18 5PP is about 200m further east. \nPublic transport\nTrains: Tattenham Corner station 500m\, Epsom Downs station 1.6km\, Epsom station 3.3km.\nBuses: “Tattenham Corner” (not “Tattenham Corner railway station”) bus stop is adjacent\, only Metrobus services 460 & 480 are likely to be any use. bustimes.org \nTerrain\nThe bulk of the mapped area is open grassland\, very fast running. Some controls are in woodland\, which will require accurate navigation if you are not to lose time. No steep hills\, but there is a 50m height difference between the lowest and highest points of the map. \nThe southern ¾ of the area is the famous racecourse and adjacent training gallops. The racecourse itself is bounded by white rails and fences\, and is out-of-bounds except at crossing points. Most crossing points are on the level\, but one is a tunnel. There are other tracks bounded by white rails\, but without fences; these are in-bounds. The one road in this area of the map closes to the public at 5pm. There are a couple of houses which use it for access\, so a car on the road is possible\, but visibility is excellent and you’ll see it a mile off; just step off the road if you see headlights. \nThe northern ¼ of the area is a golf course\, criss-crossed by public roads. All these roads have a path or runnable grassland besides them\, so there is no need to run along them. I haven’t cluttered the map with purple crosses; nevertheless please cross at right-angles and give way to traffic. Some of the roads have a little bank alongside them\, too small to map\, but big enough to trip over; take care! Please keep off the golf greens\, these are the small areas of particularly short grass with a flag in the middle\, mapped as out-of-bounds. Look carefully at your map\, as small areas of out-of-bounds hashing can be difficult to spot. \nFormat\nA one-hour score event with a mass start at 19:30. The main course will have 20 controls\, numbered 90 to 109 which may be visited in any order. You score a point for each control visited\, and lose a point for each minute\, or part of a minute\, late back. \nTo keep the faster people occupied for an hour\, there will be bonus points available. You get an extra point for consecutively punching 3 controls in the 90-99 number range\, ie without punching a control numbered 100 or above in between. Likewise you get an extra point for punching 3 100-109 controls without a 90-99 in between. No control can be counted in more than one bonus sequence. There is no requirement for the ‘sequence’ controls to be consecutive numbers\, they just have all to be ‘90’s or all ‘100’s. Thus 93-91-96 is as good as 90-91-92. \nSummary: \n\n\n\npoint for each control punched\n20\n\n\npoint for each series of three “90”s controls\n3\n\n\npoint for each series of three “100”s controls\n3\n\n\n\n  \nScoring examples: \n\n\n\nyou punch 101\,104\,90\,102\,103\,93\,105\,97\,107\,106\,finish\n10 points for 10 controls\n\n\nyou punch 90\,93\,97\,101\,104\,102\,103\,105\,107\,106\,finish\n13 points\, 10 for controls\, 3 for sequences 90-93-97\, 101-104-102 & 103-105-107\n\n\nyou punch 101\,104\,102\,90\,93\,97\,103\,105\,107\,106\,finish\n13 points\, 10 for controls\, 3 for sequences 101-104-102\, 90-93-97 & 103-105-107\n\n\n\n  \nTo reiterate\, this is NOT one of those events where you have to visit all your 90’s before 100’s or vice versa. You can jump about between 90’s and 100’s as much you like and each control will score. If you are not going for bonus points\, the control codes do not matter at all. \nPunching will be with SI. SIAC (touch-free punching) should be enabled\, so be careful if you pass close to a control that you do not want to punch because it would break a sequence. If you visit a control twice\, only the first visit will be count for scoring purposes. \nSI dibbers (the old type\, not SIAC) are available to hire via the entries system. \nPlease download as soon as you have finished (or given up) to avoid the organiser having a nervous breakdown while organising a search party for you. \nSpecial rules for juniors who have yet to reach their 16th birthday\nBritish Orienteering does not permit you to race across public roads. Therefore you are not permitted to visit the controls on the golf course. This deprives you of the opportunity of visiting 6 controls\, and getting 2 bonus sequences\, reducing your maximum score by 8 points. To compensate\, if you visit all 14 controls which are available to you\, you will get a bonus point for every complete 3 minutes by which you finish early\, up to a maximum of 8 bonus points for finishing in 36 minutes or less. No bonus for finishing early if you don’t punch all 14 controls. “Complete” 3 minutes means that you must finish within 57 minutes for one bonus point\, 57 minutes and one second would be too late. \nThese bonus points are only available to U16’s; older people need to visit controls rather than finish early. \nThe finish is on the far side of a road from the car park and download\, however my understanding is that you are allowed to cross a road so long as you are not racing. Take care\, and make use of the mid-road island next to the roundabout. \nEntries\nIn advance only and online only\, closing at midnight the day before the event\, via racesignup. Discount for the first four people agreeing to collect about five controls each after the event (experienced night orienteers only please). \n\n\n\nSenior British Orienteering member\n£5.00\n\n\nSenior British Orienteering member offering to collect controls\n£2.50\n\n\nSenior non-member\n£6.00\n\n\nJuniors (U21 on 31/12/2025)\n£2.00\n\n\nSI dibber hire\n£1.00\n\n\n\nLost hire dibbers will be charged at £30. \nUnder-18’s must have the permission of parent or guardian to enter. \nPrecautions\nTorch and a backup compulsory. A mobile phone with a light will do for backup provided it has adequate battery – carrying a phone is recommended anyway. An emergency phone number (ICE) will be printed on the map. Cagoules\, hat & gloves may be compulsory if the weather is bad. Please ensure that you clear and check your SI dibber before starting (we use the check box to know who has started) and please download as soon as possible after finishing. \nIn the case of extreme bad weather\, the event may be cancelled. The most likely cause would be thunderstorms – the downs are high and exposed and lightning would be a serious risk. If in doubt\, please check the Mole Valley website. \nThe usual orienteering hazards are present\, including trees anxious to trip you up or poke your eye out. With much of the course being tree-free fast running\, it’s easy to rush into the woodland at the same speed without taking due care. There are also a few rabbit holes\, and a deep pit close to the northernmost control (109). \nThe roads are fast but visibility is very good\, just watch out for the small earth-banks along the edge\, usually too small to map but big enough to trip you up. You may cross the roads\, but not run along the tarmac; running the grass besides them is fine. \nFormal COVID-19 restrictions are a thing of the past\, but please stay away if you suspect you may have a contagious disease\, and respect any desire of others for social distancing. \nSafety bearing\nIf lost on the racecourse side (south of the start)\, head north. If lost on the golf course (north of the start)\, head south. SUMMARY:2024 Summer Series event 2: Tolworth Court Farm Fields
DESCRIPTION:Entry: Racesignup.co.uk. £3 seniors (£5 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members)\, or £4 for newcomer pairs/groups/families \n \n\n\n\nMeeting point and Après-O: Registration in the beer garden of the William Bourne pub\, Moor Lane\, Chessington\, KT9 2BQ – map. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~10-minute walk from Chessington North railway station. Bus routes serving Nearby stops are 71\, 418\, 467 and 671. There is a small car park available at the pub and on street parking available a short distance away on Moor Lane and surrounding roads. \n\n\n\nCourses:1-hour score. “Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40.  \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used. This means using a smartphone with the MapRun app (latest is version 7)\, or load the MapRunG app onto a compatible Garmin watch. Details of how orienteering works with this app are here. You will download the course to the app ideally before you arrive: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2024 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:7:500 scale waterproof orienteering map. Example (blank) map at registration. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. \nTerrain: A mixture of open grassland\, riverside towpaths and urban. You will potentially go through long grass on the score course – leg cover advised. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. DESCRIPTION:Mole Valley Orienteering Club welcomes you to Reigate Priory Park\, which combines a town park of historic interest\, lake and recreation facilities\, with runnable contoured woodlands. \n \nOn offer is a GLOSS (Light Green) course\, with optional extension and a Yellow course (suitable for juniors/beginners) \nEntries: via racesignup.co.uk. Entries close at 12:00\, 22nd June. Limited entry on the day subject to map availability and payment by card only. Helpers get a free entry! Toilets at Hackbridge station may be open. \nTravel: Hackbridge station (1km). Buses on both Croydon and London Roads. Limited parking spaces adjacent to the Pavilion Café and competitors are encouraged to use the car park behind the cottages on Church Road. Other parking on Church Road\, and two other car parks\, one off Croydon Road and another off London Road. All parking is shared with the public\, so please be considerate when parking. \nEntry: Enter up to the day on Racesignup Senior £6 (non-member £8). Junior/Student £3. You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nGetting there: The pub is ~5-minute walk from Cheam railway station. Cycle parking just round the corner from the pub here. Cheam Library Car Park is opposite the pub and is £1.50 for the evening after 6.30pm. \nCourses: for the experienced: 1-hour score\, odds and evens format. Also available for beginners/newcomers a simpler ~3km linear course. “Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour. “Odds and evens” means you start with either odd-numbered or even numbered controls and may switch once to the other. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40. Start 3 minute walk from the pub via Park Lane (click for directions). \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used.
