SUMMARY:MV Summer Series evening on Epsom Common
DESCRIPTION:Bonus 7th event in our now 7-part summer series. App-based low-key evening orienteering event suitable for newcomers\, improvers and more experienced orienteers.\nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. Free for MV members. For non-MV members: £3.50 seniors (£5.50 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members) \nMeeting point and Après-O: The Cricketers Inn\, 1 Stamford Green Rd\, Epsom KT18 7SR (google maps link). You will be able to leave your bags during your run. We encourage you to make use of the pub’s food and refreshments for a social after\, as they are providing us space for free. \nNewcomers: we recommend watching this 5 minute video on youtube to introduce the sport. However\, see Course and Format sections below. At the event\, we will be happy to provide further introduction and instruction. \nGetting there: Parking on nearby streets. If coming by train\, Epsom station is ~1.3km away (15 mins walk). \nCourse: This event is a Polar Bear themed orienteering challenge\, played using the MindGames app. Players must visit ice-hole checkpoints to dive underwater where they can collect fish to score points. Players may only spend a limited time underwater before they must surface for more air\, or risk losing their fish. Full rules and tutorials will be provided in advance and a briefing provided on the night. There is a short/kids (40 minute) and a long/adults (75 minute) course available.  If you choose to do the short course\, your points still count towards the league: points scores will be scaled up to match the long course. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:45. Start from the pub. \nFormat: this event will exclusively use the MindGames app\, you will therefore need a phone\, with connectivity\, to take part. Checkpoints become activated when players are at a control site\, and game actions can be performed. A simple tutorial on using the app is available here: https://aarcseries.azurewebsites.net/faq.php \nRules: The rules for the game are available online here and a walk-through tutorial is here. Full explanation will be available on the night\, or email questions in advance to the race organiser. \nMap: a double-sided A4 map will be provided at the start. An example version of which is also available at the start. \nTerrain: primarily woodland\, with an extensive path network. Course has been designed to be path-based\, thereby avoiding the need for full leg cover. \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event. Rank on the score class contributes to summer series league points. \nSeries information: Best 4 of 7 events counts towards your total score. \nEvent official: Organised and planned by James Fraser (James.ontwowheels@gmail.com). \nSafety notes based on the event risk assessment: \n\n\nRoad crossings require care and attention . The only required road crossing is directly outside the start finish\, this is a minor road but care should be taken. Either side of this road is a drainage ditch\, that can be navigated around or crossed with care.\n\n\nYou may encounter long vegetation on the course but all controls are accessible by paths or across low-cut grass. Shorts are acceptable.\n\n\nThe paths/trails under tree canopy may become darker towards the end of the event\, so extra care should be taken in such circumstances. Sunset is at 21.00 whereas courses close at 20:45.\n\n\nYou will encounter trip hazards \, including woodland paths/trails\, such as tree roots and uneven ground\, as well as steps and uneven footpaths; please take care.\n\n\nThere are several fallen trees \, both at ankle/knee height and also at shoulder/head height\, runners should be mindful of their surroundings\, particularly when not running on major paths.\n\n\nThe weather is forecast ~26 degrees. Please arrive fully hydrated and wear suitable clothing. Consider carrying water with you. Water is available at the Start/Finish.\n\n\nSafety bearing : North to Christ Church Road then east to Stamford Green where the pub is.\n\n\nAll competitors must report back to the MV team at the finish (even if you wish to retire\, so that everyone is accounted for. Courses close 20:45. If injury prevents you from returning to Registration\, please phone the emergency number printed on the map by 8.45pm\, to avoid the need for a search party and to enable help to be provided if necessary.\n\n\nDogs may be encountered; alert owner you’re approaching if from behind and give wide berth.\n\n\nPlease check for and remove ticks after your run.\n\n\nElectric fencing is present: Competitors are obliged to cross electric fences only at crossing places or gates.\n\n\nCows will be present on the course: Cows are selected for their docility\, and will be very unlikely to react to passing runners. However\, participants are advised to avoid cows all the same.\n\n\nNearest Hospital: Epsom Hospital\, Dorking Road\, Epsom\, KT18 7EG.
