DESCRIPTION:Who will have the honour of Picnic Champion 2024 and take Moley home this year? \nThis year’s picnic event will be held using the MapRun App  \nEntries: This is a closed event for MVOC members and their guests. SUMMARY:Come and try orienteering at Horton Country Park
DESCRIPTION:Come and try out orienteering at Horton Country Park for free!\nSuitable for newcomers and families. No experience necessary! You can walk or run. \nWe will have free maps of the permanent orienteering course available\, with four courses to choose from. \nCome find us near the BBQ field which is adjacent to the car park (what3words: ///bunks.equal.fries). Google maps link for the car park entrance from Horton Lane\, Epsom: https://maps.app.goo.gl/EbMck8F7h6b6URUu6 \nWhat to bring\nIf you have a compass\, that will be handy\, else we can lend you one. If you bring a smartphone you can also follow the course on a phone\, though we will provide printed maps. Some routes may take you through long grass\, for which some people prefer leg cover. \nWhat courses are at Horton?\nAs well as the start post\, there are 24 controls around the Park. We have suggested four courses that use a selection of the controls to make courses varying in length and difficulty: \n\na beginner’s course\,\nshort and long intermediate courses\,\nand a longer expert course.\n\nThe controls are shown on the map with numbered purple circles. To do the course\, visit the controls in the order shown on the map. You do not need to follow the purple line; you choose a route that suits you. \nOn the ground there are wooden posts with red and white markings. The posts have unique numbers and letters\, as shown for control 23 in the photo below. SUMMARY:Dorking - Winter Street O
DESCRIPTION:This is the 1st event of a series of 8 winter evening Street Orienteering events MVOC are organising on a monthly basis from September to April. Each event will be a 1-hour or 40 minute score event and a league table will be compiled from the results of each event as they proceed. The best 5 results from the 8 events will determine the final league positions. There will be a trophy for the first male competitor and The Lois Exell trophy will be presented to the first female competitor at or soon after the final event. \nTo take part in this event: Pre-enter at racesignup.co.uk Please\, if possible\, use a smartphone and ensure you have latest version of MapRun installed and the course is downloaded to your phone before you arrive. Details of how to obtain a copy of the app and how it works can be found here \nDownload the course onto the app by clicking on ‘Select Event\, and following the menu path UK > Mole Valley > StreetO 24/25 Winter Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at Registration on the night. There are no written answers required with MapRun and your result will be automatically downloaded when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. You can also use a Garmin watch with the MapRunG app installed and the course loaded. \nIf you are really unable to use MapRun\, you are still welcome to take part by completing the control sheet with pen or pencil but this is a much slower method. With this approach\, timing will be by SI Start/Finish units – timing device supplied if you do not have your own. The procedure will again be explained at Registration. \nRegistration/ Start location: the King’s Arms pub 45 West Street\, Dorking\, RH4 1BU \nParking: Town centre car parks nearby and some free evening street parking available within a short walk. \nPublic transport: Dorking West station 0.7km\, Dorking (Deepdene) station 1.3km\, Dorking station 1.5km. 465 bus from Kingston stops nearby (and return bus to Kingston stops outside the pub). \nMap: 1;10\,000 scale and printed on waterproof paper. \nEquipment required:  Smartphone if possible\, with MapRun installed and course downloaded in advance (see above) otherwise pen or pencil; watch or timepiece; torch or head torch; whistle in case of an emergency/injury. High visibility clothing. \nEntry Fee: £3.50 to all BOF members\, £5.50 to non-BOF members. Juniors under 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult and the pairing will be charged the appropriate adult fee (above). Free to Mole Valley OC members and ‘Supporters”. \nStarts: Starts between 6.30pm and 7.30pm (no need to book an exact start time). \nScore Event: “Score” just means that there is no set course. Your map will show a number of controls\, but you don’t have to visit them all. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour.
