SUMMARY:2024 Summer Series event 3: Epsom Common/Wells
DESCRIPTION:A rare opportunity to orienteer around ancient Epsom Common and the historic\nWells estate\, based at The Jolly Coopers\, Epsom\, a pub with its own brewery. \n \nEntry: Racesignup.co.uk. £3 seniors (£5 if not British Orienteering members)\, £2 juniors (£3 if not BOF members)\, or £4 for newcomer pairs/groups/families \nCourses: \n\n\nFor the experienced: 1-hour score format (map scale 1:7500).“Score” means there is no set course. Your map will show several controls\, you choose which and how many to visit. You get points for each control you do visit and lose points if you take more than an hour.\nVariable points per control (27 controls available)\nPenalty if over 60 minutes: 30 points per minute or part minute\nHighest net points score wins (if tied\, winner is in least time)\n\n\nSuitable for beginners/newcomers a simpler ~3.8km linear course\n9 controls\, ~30m climb (1:5000 scale map)\nA course with control points to be visited in a set order. Your map shows the control\nlocations and the order. Fastest time to complete the course wins\n\nAssembly and start location: the Jolly Coopers pub\, 84 Wheelers Lane\, Epsom\, KT18 7SD. Post run refreshments! Do stay around to discuss your routes and strategies with fellow runners over drinks and food after. Kitchen open until 8.30pm. \nStarts: from 18:30 to 19:30. Courses close 20:40.  \nFormat: exclusively on the MapRun app – the app ‘beeps’ when you visit a control site. No physical controls located in the park and dibbers will not be used. This means using a smartphone with the MapRun app (latest is version 7)\, or load the MapRunG app onto a compatible Garmin watch. Details of how orienteering works with this app are here. You will download the course to the app ideally before you arrive: click on ‘Select Event’\, and follow the menu path UK > Mole Valley > 2024 Summer Series. The course will not be visible on your phone until you receive the PIN number at the start. You upload your result when you finish. The full procedure will be explained at Registration. \nMap: A4 1:7\,500 (score) or 1:5000 (linear) scale waterproof map from OpenOrienteeringMap. We can explain map colours and symbols to newcomers. Example (blank) map at registration. \nTerrain: A mixture of open grassland\, paths and urban. Please note that as the courses include a number of minor roads\, children U16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. You will potentially go through long grass on the score course – leg cover advised. Check for ticks after your run! \nResults: provisional live on the app and final on mvoc.org soon after the event.
