ONE HOUR SCORE EVENT

DORKING

29 APRIL 2001

I have discovered that I miscalculated Nigel's score (giving him points for his wrong answer to number 13). Can you please knock him down from 400 to 390, and from 6= to 8th.

Planners comments (Ian Ditchfield)

25 people braved the heavy showers, and all were rewarded with a run during the only two-hour dry period all day, although it was wet underfoot, and I gather than some of the steep footpaths around Glory Wood and Deepdene Terrace were decidedly slippery. You all claimed to have enjoyed yourself, which was very pleasing for me.

My original intention was to plan a course which would tempt the best to go for all the controls, but either have to miss one, or come back just over time. Then while I was planning, the restrictions on access to the two summits (Glory Wood & Deepdene Terrace) were removed. I added them in without significantly cutting the course elsewhere, so I was under the impression that I had produced a course on which nobody would get close to visiting all the controls. My estimate was that the winner would visit only 20 of the 27 controls, with a route something like 29,17,26,28,34,38,39,36,35,25,31,24,22,23,21,33,32,27,16,37 for 470 points (out of 540).

Tony's route may have been something like this; certainly the controls he visited were much as I expected, with the addition of 12 & 18, and the omission of 16. It was just as well that I planned an "overlong" course, because Graham very nearly got the lot, missing only 13 & 14. A terrific performance!

*Addendum - 01 May 2001

I have discovered that I miscalculated Nigel's score (giving him points for his wrong answer to number 13). His points total is amended from 400 to 390, and his position changes from 6= to 8th.
